Free Range Organic Meat
« on: June 09, 2012, 02:00:33 AM »
WA just finished their special permit draw for big game tags.  After 4 years of trying I finally drew something.  I got a tag for antlerless deer AND antlerless elk.     =D

 [ar15] [ar15] [ar15]

Sooooooooo stoked.  Can hardly wait now for the seasons to open.  Shouldn't be too hard to fill up the freezer.  I've been wanting some venison steak for a year and half.

I'm also hoping that I do get the elk.  I've been saving the leather from the hide of last one I shot (2007) hoping that I'd get another one so I'd have enough leather to get a jacket made.  If I get the doe too, with the leather from that one plus the blacktail buck's hide from 2009 I'll certainly have enough leather to get a custom Bible bound for each of the 3 kids.

Just come out here to NJ. More dear than you could ever kill. I think the non government estimates are 40 per sq mile.
Season is open a 100 days for normal hunting. Year round with your car/truck.
No limit on doe's.

I've got the last of the blacktail I shot in 2009 thawing for some jerky.

g2 - What's your favorite smoked elk recipe?

Congratulations on the draw. I quit putting in for special draws in WA this year. I have decided to take the money I would spend on all of the special draws I normally put in for and get a non-resident ID license. The wolf tags went for 5 dollars last year, I am hoping on having some grilled wolf backstraps this winter.

I would bet money I am already there. Having eaten tons of food from street vendors in the Philippines, Korea and Thailand, I would be very surprised if I haven't eaten ole Spot or Rover already, along with monkey and rodent.

You know what they say, protein is protein, or do I say that.  ;)

BTW, did you know that the eyeball from a rabbit is a good source of protein, at least that is what they told us in SERE school many years ago.  =D

I live a little bit to the west of Spokane, for all intents and purposes, in Spokane.

Or as some of us like to say, the dry side, although you wouldn't know it so far this year. I guess we could also be called the "red side", for all the good it does.  ;)

If you get over to the wet side let me know.  I'll grill you some venison or elk.

I am planning a trip in Sept, but a little south of you. I am doing a tuna fishing trip out of Westport in early Sept. I do get over the Whidbey once a year or so, that would put me closer.  ;)

I will keep you in mind.

Goinig out on the Rampage?  Or one of the other tuna boats?

If I can put the money together I want to make another attempt at albacore.  Won't have any venison this September.  Should have some good doe meat by mid-October though.  The cow hunt isn't until January, but I'll be going with a buddy during general season to Willian O Douglass Wilderness Area.  If I see a legal bull out there I'll probably take him rather than wait for January.  But, my priority on that hunt will be to get my buddy his first elk.  I have a sneaking suspicion that by the time we've packed one bull out of there neither of us will be up for a second bull.

Whidbey is quite close to me.  I go fishing off there as time allows.  IIRC Oak Harbor is less than an hour's drive, probably close to 50 minutes in light traffic.

I'm on tap to hunt black bear, pronghorn, whitetail and numerous game birds this year.

I'm looking forward to eating the bear, to me bear tastes like a mix of beef and pork.

We are going out with these guys. It will be our first trip with them, so we will see how it goes. He takes a max of 6 people. There are 4 couples from where I work going, the men will fish, the women will shop.  =D

Don't count your venison before it's gutted  ;)
