2 choices for a new car what does aps have to say?
« on: June 28, 2012, 10:51:47 PM »
GF is down to 2 choices for a new car.
Its is either the 2012 Forester with the 225 hp engine. <--- my choice
or 2012 Hundai Tuscon. Less power and a Hundai (meh)

What does aps have to say? Any horror stories on either model?

I know lots of people with subies and they are all high millage, everyone would buy another.

Can you get either one a model year earlier?

You lose 25%+ of a new car's value the moment you drive it off the lot.   Let someone else take that hit.  Dealers normally have test drivers/loaners or cars that were fleet vehicles/Rental Agency cars that are still under warranty.

The 2013's are out for both, so they are about 4 grand less already.
We might take a 2011 used but she gets some special discounts through work that add up to about 3g for the sube or 2g for the hundai. Don't get that on used.

Given the various incentives, sometimes the new car is a better deal.  For example, we bought our shiny new Mazda 6 for less than the local market street price for a year old model.  Gotta run the numbers both ways.

Subaru has 0.9 percent financing.
Hundai has 1.9.

Make sure that neither requires premium fuel.

Neighbor has 2 Hundai, and loves them.

I have ridden in them, and they seem nice.

Both blower motors (vents for A/C seem to move less air than I am used to)/

Whatever is cheaper in total payments, and in gas.

Don't forget maintenance costs.  Tires can be spendy if they are a special kind, right Dick?

And an extra year or two of warranty is nice.

My 2010 Ford Focus actually gets 41 MPG on the highway with just the driver and not a lot of luggage.  39 or 40 MPG if there's 2 people in it (or several buckets of lead wheel weights from my friend in Texas who's owns a tire shop.)

Average combined mileage with a lot of city driving in a town with unsynchronized traffic lights is just over 30.  And it take regular unleaded gas.

Don't know about the Forrester, but our Outback sedan is nice.

Downsides:
- Road noise. Tires and wind.
- Had to replace some suspension pieces, forgot which, at less than 60k miles.
- Usual squeeks and rattles. Car has about 70k on it.

Upsides
- Warms up fast. Great in winter.
- Flat 6 engine has some punch.

I've had two Subaru Legacy Outbacks. Larger body size than the Forester, but similar.

Before I bought my latest Obie, I drove a Forester. Early ones were very truck like and felt quite unstable. The 2010 I drove was a dream.

I went with the Obie because of the larger size and my having to cart Mason around.

Overall I am very happy with Subaru products.

I drive a Kia Rondo myself (I know, no cool factor there), and based on the Kia/Hyundai relationship I'd have to vote for the Hyundai.  Nothing sexy about them, but they work well and I can tell you they are outstanding in an accident as far as keeping the driver safe.  Worst thing I can say about my Kia is that when you get a tire replaced they have to have the kits for the tire pressure sensors, but I think most new cars have that now anyway.

I like what I see about the Subaru, but I keep hearing about high maintenance/repair costs, but that's all second hand so I can't speak with authority on it.

Ok she test drove both cars on Friday. Hated the Hundai, can't see out the back and noisy. These were common complaints about this car on the web.
I test drove the Forrester today and liked it. Tried it out on some beat up PA roads also.
So as long as they can get the one we want trucked in from another dealership its a done deal.
The model we drive with the 175 hp engine had good pickup, it should be a beast with the extra 50hp from the turbo model.

I'm on my second Forester now, a new-at-purchase 2008 model (my first-ever brand new car). Prior to that I had a 98. Decent cargo capacity especially with the rear seats down, seats 4-5 (though the 2-3 in back should not be overly large) with them up, good power in stock edition so you're right that the additional 50hp for the turbo model ought to be quite fun. Decent standard off-road capability, excellent in upstate-NY-style winter weather. I don't get great mileage, though I could do better if I'd drive less like I did when I owned a 5.0L Mustang. I probably wouldn't have had to have spent $1100 on brakes and rotors last month, either... Standard trans would get about 2mpg better than the 24 or so I get combined city/highway (upwards of 28 straight highway, but I don't do that much lately). I had to have auto, because Lori cannot and more importantly WILL not drive a stick shift. =| Once I get my mid-life-crisis-mobile (another Mustang, of course), that means it'll be ALL MINE!!! Mua-HAHAHAHAHA!!!!  >Ahem< Sorry about that.

If you can deal with a max of ~30mpg highway, I'd have no problem recommending Subaru in general and a Forester in particular.

The tag is 27mpg for the turbo model, Still better than the 20 she gets in the Tribute or the 18 I get in the truck.

Another funny piece of data.
It took 6 months to pick out tile for the bathroom.
1 day to pick a car? How does that work?
