I like the s-shaped airlocks a lot better than the other kind. I always fill them with vodka. I don't use airlocks with beer though, only wine.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

for beer we intentionally fill to within a few inches of the top and use a large diameter tube for the airlock.  it allows most of the foam from the early stages of fermentation to remove itself.  i think this help remove some unwanted bitterness.  any correlation to wine making?

Very interesting brimic, thanks for posting. Had been intending to get started brewing for a while, and my wonderful wife recently got me a brewing kit so I've started reading up on it in earnest.  =)
