I've been going 'round and 'round with Google Adwords for years. Each time I change a word in an ad, it has to be reviewed, and the ad team rejects my ad because my site promotes guns. When I explain to them that I don't sell guns or other weapons, and that they have a zillion other advertisers selling scopes and lasers, they realize they screwed up, and my ads run.

If Google Shopping uses the same policy as Google AdWords (which is what they say they're going to do), then my listings should continue, although I'll have to pay for them. If they "modify" the policy to really exclude sites that sell non-weapons, then I'm screwed even more than before Google messed up my rankings, as I get a lot of sales through Google Shopping.

Even if they allow me to continue, it's going to be a pay-to-rank program. You'll have to pay $X just to be in the program, and pay more to rank higher. Then, on top of that, the merchant has to pay for each click. This effectively shuts out the small online retailer.

One possible upside is that if Google doesn't allow listings for scopes or lasers or anything else gun-related, then people looking for that stuff will have to go elsewhere. And maybe that elsewhere will be Bing or Yahoo, where I rank really high for everything.

I hate Google.

I've been using Bing more and more. Bing maps are better than Google, for one.

Only issue is that my ipad has Google search built it. I'll have to see if I can fix that.

I feed google shopping and I am confused with this new pay to play thing coming up.
I do not do adwords or any other pay service. I'm going to have to figure it out because I get 90 percent of my search engine traffic from google. All the other engines fight over the last 10 percent. I think I think my sale would tank if I do nothing.

I feed about 2400 products, with competitors with deep pockets. I have no idea what to do.

I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

I know the feeling very well. Google can make or break you. They've grown so big that almost every online business owner lives in fear of them.

If they are are able to dominate the market, maybe time to sue them for antitrust law violations?  (triple damages)

Of course if they are like some other big corps that I'm familiar with, they have lawyers on salary whose job it is to delay lawsuits for *years* with endless motions so you'll run out of money (or die) before it gets to court.

Sadly, no.

They are for me. Bing shows the street I live on, The Goog does not. Plus, Bing lets me rotate the aerial view to change perspectives, which is quite useful.

Bing's ability to locate local businesses on a map is inferior. They don't show up.
Bing's ability to find the shopping search items I am looking for is also inferior.

I do this all the time on my Android phone, and any Android tablet.

Anyone trying to put together a campaign to try to ask Google to reconsider?

IMO, in a few years Google will do what eBay did, be scrounging for whatever minor growth opportunities they can find in the "long tail" of specialty markets and reverse themselves on the "gun policy", making it all for naught anyway.

I promise not to duck.

With this change in Google Shopping, you may just find that Bing is better. I'm guessing that Amazon, Ebay and all of the other huge online merchants are going to bid up all of the keyphrases, even if they don't sell what you're looking for (which is what they often do now on AdWords). If so, you'll have to wade through their results first, only to find that they don't have what you're looking for. Maybe that won't happen, but I'd bet it will.

What's always steamed me about Google's policies towards guns and gun accessories is that they treat those who sell them the same way they treat pornographers. There's no difference in Google's eyes. The sellers of sex stuff get a pass, though. Do a search for "adult toys" or "sex toys" "dildo" or "inflatable sex doll". There's plenty of ads for those. But "rifle scope"? It takes a lot of arguing to get an ad using that phrase published right now, and it may be that Google Shopping won't accept it at all.

Is a rifle scope not an adult toy?

Well, I suppose you could use a rifle scope in a way that's in the usual context of the phrase "adult toy", but I think it would be uncomfortable.

That's not quite the context I was talking about.

It would seem to me that if Google does choke out all the smaller internet sellers, they will lose users who will go elsewhere to find the links to the smaller internet sellers.  If I want to shop on amazon.com, I'll go directly to amazon.com.  I don't need Google to take me there.

I don't go to Google Shopping to find stuff.  I go to the main Google page.  (Assuming I don't just go to Midway or some other vendor I'm familiar with.)

I'm finding it interesting that while Google is restricting advertising for "weapons", places like Amazon seem to be increasing them. Besides hunting and shooting, Amazon not that many months ago started a "Tactical and Duty" section. I get recommendations from it all the time.

If Amazon is doing it, obviously there's a market out there in the "general" (versus shooting sport specific) internet sales community. One can't help but wonder at Google's motivations.

Google's motivation is arrogance.  They apparently don't like guns (oooh, ick) and think they can ignore that market and not suffer.  They will learn as Wal--Mart, E-bay and other have learned that trying to downplay or not participate will cost them not only that market(share) but also in other markets as disgusted gunowners refuse to do business with them.

Apparently they fail to realize that the only part of the economy that is growing is firearms and related products.
