ASK.com is a disease of the '90s that just will not die...

For whatever reason, it becomes my default search engine from time to time. I've tried to remove every trace of it several times. I guess it could be related to the fact that I've search ASK about a million times for "why does ASK suck so bad".
It can't find the answer to that question...or any other that I've axed.

I don't remember if it's the Java updater or one of the Adobe (acrobat reader/flashplayer/AIR) programs, but one of them by default will install the Ask.com toolbar unless you un-check the box.  (I hate that crap.  Let me opt-in, don't force me to opt-out. bastages)

Yeah, either adobe flash or java default to installing the Ask toolbar. So whenever you do updates you have to uncheck that box before you install.

Oracle Java update/installer has defaulted opt-out checkboxes for Ask default search engine and toolbar that pops up every time. I guess Ellison needs the extra $.02 every person who installs Ask without checking earns Oracle.

A lot of the Ask infestations comes from there. And even non-tech savvy people generally know "Java" is a normal/trusted part of the operating environment so probably click through with all default options.

I promise not to duck.

People I run into tend not to know that.  "java, it keeps popping up.  should I be doing that?"

Looking at websites that make my Java pop up, probably caused the problem in the first place:).

Ummm.  I've been using Ask.com for years as my default search engine - haven't had any problems (related to it) since day one.

I did notice that one of the updates on DW's computer the other day did want to install the toolbar, we said No.

I've accidentally installed the ASK toolbar with a Java upgrade in the past.

You have to jump through their hoops to get rid of it, the standard software removal tool in Windows cannot uninstall it as far as I can tell.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.
