A Nepali farmer who was bitten by a cobra in his rice paddy field has killed the snake by repeatedly biting it in return.

"A snake charmer told me that if a snake bites you, bite it until it is dead and nothing will happen to you," Mohammed Salmodin told the BBC.

He has now been discharged from hospital where he was being treated for the snake bite.

Officials say he will not be charged because the reptile was not endangered.

"When I realised that a snake had bit me, I went home to get a torch and saw that it was a cobra. So I bit it to death," he told BBC Nepali's Bikram Niraula in Biratnagar.

After he bit the snake to death, Mr Salmodin said that he went about his daily business as if nothing had happened. He says he finally agreed to go to hospital after pressure from family, neighbours and police.

The incident took place on Tuesday in a village 200km (125 miles) south-east of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.

The snake he killed is reported to have been the common cobra. Nepal has a a wide variety of snakes, many of which are venomous - such as the cobra.

Estimates suggest that there are 20,000 cases of snake bite in Nepal a year, most of them in the Terai southern plains, causing about 1,000 deaths, the AFP news agency reports.

Advice for victims of snake bite can vary, partly because different snakes have different types of venom.

However, guidelines issued by the UK's National Health Service say:

Remain calm
Try to remember the snake's shape, size and colour
Keep the bitten part of your body as still as possible to prevent the venom spreading
Remove any jewellery or watches from the bitten limb as it may swell
Do not attempt to remove any clothing, such as trousers
Seek immediate medical attention
Widely known treatments, such as the application of a tourniquet or trying to suck out the venom, are not recommended.

What we do not know is whether or not the guy skinned the cobra, made a belt and hatband out of the hide, and invited the village for a feast.

stay safe.

Jeebus!

I know. That was the thing that stood out the most in that article for me too. We live in a world gone mad.

Thank you Skidmark. :) While I have heard of biting a puppy's ears to teach him not to bite, I can't say I've ever heard of "revenge-biting" a venomous anything. I would have thought a hoe would suffice.

I sprayed the outside of the house again yesterday with something my neighbor assured me would be lethal to spiders. Don't know what it was exactly but it smelled like the nasty stuff we used to use when I was a kid. Anyway, then left to run errands. When I came home, there was a big damn wood spider (I guess, it's not like I'm going to look up pictures online to identify it) sitting on the panel below the soffit, directly over where I walk from my truck to go into the house. 20+ foot long stretch of wood, and he's sitting directly over where I normally walk. Tell me he wasn't waiting for a little "revenge-biting" of his own. But he's dead now. My son knocked him down and I got him with the regular spider spray, which takes approximately 7 minutes to kill.

Anybody's brand of wasp spray.  Not only does it give you range, but you can watch them curl up into a ball as the stuff hits them.  Tactically, short bursts are how you are supposed to do it.  With waiting in between to see what effects you are getting.  Personally, I have always recommended that you use it just like you would pepper spray - several seconds worth in a X pattern, back and forth as needed/desired.

Wasp spray also works well of crickets that have the audacity to sneak in while I'm hauling groceries in/garbage out.  And it is excellent on wood roaches (No, MrsSmith, you do not want to look them up!) - not only lethal but causes an excellent flip on to the back and kick the legs dance.  If one of those ever gets inside I'm hitting it with wasp spray over a BIC lighter - fire department be damned!

stay safe.

Brake or Carb cleaner is good for DRT RFN applications on various arthropods. As in one second flat.

Insects and spiders, most terrestrial arthropods with chitin exoskeletons make use of natural waxes/oils/fats to maintain body integrity, waterproof their insides in, and to keep the outside world out. Aggressive solvents melt/strip all these lipids away instantly, and pretty much all their organs and body structures fail at once.

D-Limonene, which is the stuff found in citrus peels, and is actually used as a food flavoring, is really good for a non-toxic indoor direct application version for use around pets or food.

I promise not to duck.

Isopropyl alcohol works in the same way. Great for inside the house or around electrical stuff.

This is my favorite method. I use a citrus air freshener they sell at Walmart that has the stuff in it (which reminds me that I've been out for a while and need to get more). It seems to kill wasps just as fast as the Raid wasp spray does, and it's non-toxic.

I'd probably still use the wasp spray if I were going after a large hive, though...

Brake cleaner? Like what I use to clean my pistol? Really???? OMG!!!! It cleans my guns and kills spiders. I'm in love. I might marry it.

Just have plenty of ventilation.

We don't want to see booking photos of you a year from now with gold spraypaint all over your mouth, nose, and chin etc.
