Help identifying gun
« on: September 09, 2012, 11:09:37 PM »
I was at a gun store and saw what looked like about a 75%-scale 1911, in 22LR. It wasn't a full-size 22LR 1911, and it wasn't quite as small as a P22, but it looked just like a 1911. It was one of the cutest things I've ever seen, but I didn't write down the model or even make. Any ideas?

I figured as much. I mean, it's pretty much a proper 1911 in design, other than the blowback operation, so that means it's bound to be 1911-ish priced. I'm actually surprised it's not more, considering that tooling for 1911s must be pretty common and every part on this thing must be unique (even the fire control parts?).

Thinking about it, a proper 1911-22 probably makes more sense, because it's full-size and better to practice with.

But it's so cute...

I've seen a lot of those Brownings around, so that's probably what it is. But doesn't Colt make one like that, too?

Chiappa? Not a miniaturized one.

If you have a proper 1911 buy a conversion kit for a kid .22. About $400 to do it right with a Marvel. Otherwise get a Buckmark or a Ruger MK whatever. I just don't see the value in the dedicated almost a 1911 .22s. Same opinion of the dedicated .22 ARs.

I'm so contrarian that I didn't respond to the thread.

New or used?  Some (now defunct) Spanish companies made a multitude of superficially 1911-ish guns in lesser chamberings.  I can't remember right off if that included .22.  "Cute" certainly fits some of the Llama .380s.

The G00gle on "Llama .22".  Most look 1911-ish.

They make miniature moccasins  ;)

My mom had/has I think a French made .22 semi-auto.  I haven't seen it in years but it seems a lot like a 1911  =|

I bought my wife one of the Brownings for our 5-year anniversary. I just disassembled it for its pre-cleaning. It's pretty impressive in that it appears to be a proper scale-model of a 1911, guts and all. Except it's a blowback. The barrel is a strange two-piece design, and the barrel appears to float around in there rather than being fixed to the frame like most blowbacks. I should have taken apart my 1991 at the same time so I could compare parts to see if any of them are actually full-size 1911 parts. It has no series-80-type parts to it. It has a pretty bad but not unusable trigger. It had a magazine disconnect, but it was easy to fix that by filing off a nub on the aluminum trigger. I haven't shot it yet because I live in the city. So, there's my review.

SOunds like one of the Brownings. I don't know what they make the frame and slide out of, but I hope it's AL/steel and not zinc.

GSG makes a full size one that's good for the price point. Zinc alloy frame and slide but decent design. This is also sold by Sig.

Chiappa makes a full size one that's a total POS.

The slide is definitely cast aluminum. The frame...I think it's also cast aluminum because the safety plunger tube appears to be integral. The finish on the frame is good. The finish on the slide looks kind of 'cast'.
