Cotilion
« on: September 03, 2012, 05:42:35 AM »
Feel like I'm channeling Sheldon, now. BBT.
Yes, it's real. To not get invited to Cotillion- bad.
I got invited - I didn't go.

I went and sailed my little Boston Whaler, instead.

Sheldon I have heard about, and I presume Boston Whaler is a sailboat. But what is this cotillion?

No, it is a type of dance.

The Cotillion being refered to here (i beleive) is a type of ball, also known as a debutante ball.

It's one of those weirder things they do in the deep south. Ball gowns, elabirate manners, dancing and what not for young adults. One of those social traditions that's mostly dead, but in the south, people just don't like to let anything go...

Well, I have heard of a cotillion before. Just curious about why he's being invited to a cotillion. We don't got no debutante balls I ever heard of, in these here parts.

Not any here, either. Deep South, places like Alabama, Texas, Louisinia and such.

And afterwards all the debs and their beaus (in long gowns and tuxes, respectively) climb into a stretch limo and go to Taco Bell? :D

Not all of Texas, just East Texas (and north of Houston, but I'm not sure where the exact cut off is)

^^^ Hardly! These are proper young Southern ladies and this occasion is their introduction to society as such. For the purpose of letting the rest of society know that they are available to be considered for wedlock to the appropriate young Southern Gentleman. Their escorts (the same Southern Gentlemen) are chosen for them by their parents and are arranged in most cases while said youths are still in the bassinette.

Piling in the limo and hitting Taco Bell is allowed after prom or home coming, but NEVER after Cotillion. Their mothers would faint dead away.

Liz, you missed the Carolinas, Georgia, and Mississippi.

While it sounds archaic to some degree, in some ways I wish we still observed some of these gentile traditions. The world was a softer, quieter, more polite place then. Of course if you tried to force me to go to one at the age of 18, you'd have had to wire me with detcord and hold me at gunpoint and likely gag me to shut me up. Maybe similar in difficulty to trying to give a cat a bath.

Boston Whaler also made sailboats. Mine was a Squall.

Really? Huh.  Every Whaler powerboat I have run was overbuilt, heavy, and had so-so handling.  I shudder to think of a sailboat from that company.

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

Mine handled like a pig (compared to say, a Hobie cat or Laser), but it was seaworthy and a blast in some light to medium chop. Probably why Grandad got it for me. Unsinkable. =D

They are very buoyant.

However my time as a professional mariner has taught me to never use that word.  Somewhere Neptune just twitched.

Reluctant as I am to fly in the face of history, I can't think of a scenario in which my little Squall (or other Boston Whalers, for that matter) could sink. It was basically a closed-cell foam blank coated with fiberglass.

Neptune and Poseidon both shuddered. You'll need to toss whiskey off the stern the next time you leave shore.  ;)

I didn't know Whaler made sailboats either. Seems like it if it's heavy it would be hard to right if you broached.

My first sailboat was a U.S. Yachts 25, made by Bayliner. Same thing - pig boat. But it was a good learning boat.

It was incredibly easy to right, even with the mast/sail in a few feet of water. 4 foot or so centerboard. Stand on centerboard, grab gunwale, and lean back. Sailing again in no time. Never had it turn turtle. That would have been a problem. =D
