Did someone say Tuna?
« on: September 05, 2012, 11:54:31 PM »
Leaving tomorrow for a trip to the west coast, WA west coast that is. As much as I hate to travel to the west side of the state, the call of the albacore is strong. Will be heading out Friday AM on a 12 hour trip to the tuna grounds off of WA. Surprisingly, or not, this has become a pretty good tuna fishery. The guy we are going out with makes a fast run to the fishing grounds in his 29' Defiance with twin outboards and only carries 6 people to fish. It may cost a little more, but it beats chugging all night to the fish, and then fighting with 20 other people (or so) for deck space.

The last word I got from the charter captain was with 20 trips out this year he has brought back 670 tuna. That averages out to 5-6 tuna per person. With the tuna running in the 20-30 pound class, it should make for some good eating well into the future.  =)

As a bonus, because one of our party had to drop out at the last minute due to being on a death watch for his MIL, I was able to offer the spot to a fellow APSer, who took me up on the offer. So I will get to meet a real live human from the board and prove to my wife they aren't figments of my imagination!   =D

I will be thinking of all of you guys who are working Friday as I am engaged in mortal combat with the mighty albacore, or maybe not!  Pics will follow if fishing turns to catching.

Last time I went out of Oregon Inlet (North Carolina) the fish we caught paid for the charter, the trip, and left us each with a cooler full of tuna steaks and still had some cash left. That was 1989.

All the hotshots run Billfish/Marlin. I'd rather fish tuna.

See you at the dock at 0530 on Friday!  Hope this trip is better than the one I did with 41magsnub.  It could be worse, but not by much.

I'm sure 41ms will be posting the pic of me leaning over the rail as soon as he sees this thread.

I just hope that can get supplanted by a pic of me and Bob holding some nice big albacore.

Awesome fishing trip! You'll have a ball, tuna are one of the best fighting fish you can go after. Make sure you have a rod belt!

Most of the time it is illegal to sell sport caught fish of any species in WA and OR.  Can't speak for any other states though.

Up to 10kt winds.

Not glass, but hard to beat around here this time of year.  =D

20-30 lbs meh.. come out to NJ during the season an you can add a 0 to the end of that.
A friend got a 400 something pounder last year.
Biggest thing I ever fought was an approximately 600lb mako. Dam thing at through the steel leader almost at the boat.

Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Hey - meant to publically thank BobR for giving me the invite for this trip.  Thought I'd done that in the last post, but apparently not.  It was great to meet him and his friends.  Hope we can meet up again sometime, whether for fishing or something else.

You are quite welcome, I am just glad you were able to take advantage of the 1/2 price trip. You helped out someone who couldn't make it and hopefully had a great time. I have to give you props though, knowing that you are sensitive to the rocking and rolling encountered on a small boat, you did the patch, chewed the ginger gum, and still came out with us. I know more than a few people who will never get to enjoy a nice a day as we did because they are afraid they may be seasick.

Did I say nice day?

One of the nicest days of the season, as reported by the guide/Captain of the boat. In fact it was nice enough to sit in the sun, close your eyes and enter that place where you aren't quite asleep, but not quite awake. Just a nice restful spot in the sun, rocking and rolling gently as we trolled.

This trip will be added to my *must do* list for every year.

The day before we went out the boat brought in 30+ fish. The day after, the weather turned nasty, and there were only two fish landed.
