Rye Whisky recommendations?
« on: September 23, 2012, 12:47:11 PM »
My elk hunting buddy and I have decided to take some Rye Whisky on our Wilderness area hunt.  What would you guys recommend?  Since I live in the stupid state of WA it would have to a widely available brand.  Anything from a small/artisan distillery just won't be availble here.

Old Overholt should be available to you. Possibly also Bulliet.

I just discovered High West Double Rye, and it's now my favorite rye. It's small batch, but made in UT, so may be available in WA. I just checked the Bevmo site, and apparently they're not allowed to mail whiskey to WA? Otherwise you could have mail ordered it.

My last bottle of rye was Pendleton 1910, 12 year old 100% rye.  Very yummy stuff.

Where are you in WA, and what is you departure date.  I may be able to deliver.

Are the reports of huge price increases resulting from "free market" liquor true?
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

I live ~70 miles north of Seattle.  My buddy lives on Camano Is.  We're leaving early on Nov 2.

Prices are maybe a little higher than before, but I buy liquor so seldom its hard to say how much prices have changed.

(ri), Rittenhouse, Michter's. Hirsch, Sazerac are worth trying on the boutique side. Wild Turkey & Russell's Reserve, Old Overcoat and Beam ought to be available to you.

I'm going to second Ben on the Old Overholt. Love that beautiful amber goodness!

Wild Turkey 101 Rye is very nice.  Jim Beam Rye is not bad.

Oh, well, my excursions up I-5 very rarely take me north of Kent.

I really do recommend the Pendleton 1910, 'tho.

One that's not rye but has an excellent caraway finish, reminiscent of the flavor most people associate with rye bread, is Bushmill's Irish Whiskey.

Legislature slapped several massive taxes on liqour after it was privatized. Something like %28 sin tax, plus another $5-8 (per bottle!) in flat taxes regardless of total cost.
