filmed in 2009 with the original bad guys being Red Chinese, the film got made then they had to cancel releasing it due to Communist China having to much political power, so they spent a few million making the the bad guys the North Koreans.

at first it was supposed to be RD 2010 then RD 2011, now its Red Dawn 2012

Is this a comedy version ?

My thoughts exactly.  Hollywood succumbs to political pressure and makes it into an unbelievable version.  Norks? They couldn't invade a McDonald's.

Disagree. They could invade a McDonald's, it would just go broke after the starving invaders ate all the food and had nothing left to sell to customers. They would then happily accompany the arresting cops to a warm, soft bed and more hot meals.

About dang time! I'm hoping for an unofficial version to be leaked out.  >:D [ar15]

Just a slightly more believable version what with Obama in the Whitehouse and Hillary as SOC.

My STEPDAUGHTER, of all people, wants very badly to see this movie.

Apparently she thinks that Josh Hutcherson (who's in this, as well as The Hunger Games), and to a lesser extent Chris Hemsworth (Thor), are hot.  I am now officially the (step)father of a teenage girl.

Can't complain too much, though - she's 15, and this sort of thing has only been happening for about a year, so my understanding is it was late-onset. I got a couple of free years!

Jed is a Marine.

Now, I've got nothing against Marines, and the premise of a Marine successfully leading a small gurrila band aganst an invading army is completly feasible.

However, Red Dawn is about a bunch of TEENAGERS with NO COMBAT EXPERIANCE fighting off an invading army. They're weapons and combat skills stem from hunting. It is one of the best features of the orginal.

I would pass based on that fact alone. However, adding insult to injury, I love Harry Dean Stanton and was happy to hear that he was playing the dad and then LIVID when he screams something about "kill this *expletive deleted*er!" instead of "AVENGE ME, BOYS! AVENGE ME!"

Also, screw Chris Helmsworth.

If there were any justice in this world, Alexander Skarsgard would have played Thor anyway. I still can't believe they put his dad in it, but not him!

Had to look him up - not a True Blood fan.  From the photos, he looks too small-framed to be the God of Thunder - Hemsworth had to put on plenty of muscle to play the part (although he gained so much, he almost didn't fit in the costume - he literally got TOO buff). I'm not sure Skarsgard could have done it, even if he could have taken the time to film it.

Besides, while I was unsure about Hemsworth at first report, I think he absolutely NAILED the part. Looked the part, and he was just dead-on playing a depowered god exiled to Earth.  I was very happy with how well Marvel's done with casting their recent properties (starting from Iron Man in 08), and Thor was no exception.

You will note that the release -- which was originally BEFORE the 2008 election -- is now conveniently scheduled for AFTER the 2012 election.

They wouldn't even let it out for the 2010 election.

Of course, this is all just coincidence.  In the same way that the Norks are the most plausible invaders.

I'd get a kick out of it if someone could lay hands on an un-wrenched copy of the 2008 production.

That's be quite the bootleg item if it ever managed to get out into circulation.

As for the original Red Dawn, the total invasion scenario revolved around a dissolution of NATO and a communist coup in Mexico. The invading Soviets were augmented with Cuban and other communist south/central American countries. They probably could have at least his the plausibility mark with this film if they went with a similar conglomeration of invaders: Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, NorK, and possibly Iran creating a side plot of war breaking out between India and Pakistan when the former moves to interdict Iranian ships, and the Pakis joining the fray on the side of their Islamic brothers. *shrug* But what do I know?  :P

Its like you know those best parts that made the whole movie... Gone.  I loved the whole teenager, gun behind every blade of grass flavor.
Is the prospect of the child solder too horrific now?  Their plight in Africa and other heck holes too popularized that the notion of some extreme act (like being invaded) bringing it here is too real to be palatable?

I think it's simpler. This is typical bias against civilians a) acting independently, and b) using weapons without proper guidance. Having trained troops leading maintains the veneer of governmental parenting/permission.

Skarsgard is huge. He's like a giant compared to the rest of the True Blood cast. The pictures on IMDB don't do his hight justice. I think he could have easily gained enough muscle. Also, he did audition for the role. In fact, he was one of the final choices. Helmsworth squeeked him out.
Plus, he's, well, you know, Swedish.

Seriously, I loved Thor and thought Helmworth did a good job. He's a pretty boy, but so was the Golden Age Thor. I just want to give crap because of the whole "chicks go gaga over him thing."  :P I honestly don't think he's all that special.

I think it's simpler. This is typical bias against civilians a) acting independently, and b) using weapons without proper guidance. Having trained troops leading maintains the veneer of governmental parenting/permission.

This is it, in a nutshell.
The politicritters can't be letting us civilians get ideas and the thought that a bunch of untrained yokels with hunting rifles and good 'ol boy skills can do as much, if not more, damage to a invading military force as someone who is unthinkable.
