Marlin Model 60 or Ruger 10/22?
« on: November 20, 2012, 10:59:13 PM »
Ive owned both...but got bored with 22's when I stopped hunting squirrels and sold them.
Now I'm thinking about buying one again...but probably not both.
I'll likely go for the Marlin, as the Ruger always seemed a little short and stout to me.
I have no interest in add-ons or extended mags and such.
I'm curious what APS members like though...and why.

I've owned the 10/22, but spent a lot of time with the 60 as a kid.  While the 10/22 is a fun project gun, I didn't get as much enjoyment from it as I did the 60s of my youth.  My next 22lr semiauto rifle will be a 60.

I like the lines of the Model 60, but prefer loading a box magazine to loading a tube.

10/22.  Huge, and I mean "HOLY HANNAH CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT &#^@!!" huge aftermarket parts availability.

Marlin Model 60 if you want something that works great out of the box.

10/22 if you like to tinker.

For a hunting/stomping in the woods gun, I like the tube-fed Marlin above the Ruger.

For a range gun, I prefer removable box magazines.  But I favor the Marlin 795 over the Ruger 10/22.

I have had several .22 rifles over the years and like the 10/22 the best.  Easiest to work on and you can turn it into whatever sort of rifle you desire.

Also, I prefer box mags to tube mags.

The Marlin 795 is essentially a Model 60 that uses box magazines.

Nothing wrong with the Model 60, I've got 2 of them and don't plan to part with either.
Are you dead set on a self loader? Lots of classy alternatives. The Remington 572 Speedmaster is a slick pump action, Marlin 39A lever action or a Henry lever action. I've got one of the big loop Henry models. It is accurate and like other pump and lever guns will feed short, long and long rifle ammo.

I love my CZ 452 and it'd be one of the very last guns I'd ever sell, but I've been looking at adding a self loader. Anyone have experience on the new take down model 10/22? Seems like a neat idea, just wondering how the execution is.

It's also magazine compatible with the Marlin P70 Papoose, for those who like a lightweight, inexpensive takedown rifle.

I own one.  In spite of my preference for Marlins over Rugers.

I've been very pleased with it.  Unlike the take-down Marlin variants, the 10/22td responds well to adding a sling to it.  I cannot comment on sights that span both the receiver and the barrel such as TechSights.  I got scared away from them due to the take-down nature of the rifle.  But, I'm running a receiver mounted red dot on it and like it a lot.  It's my motorcycle rifle. =D

Defiantly the marlin. Great gun out of the box.

For a stock rifle, I prefer the Marlin. That's what I grew up with, so my opinion might be biased.

Like others said, if you want to tinker or accurize the rifle, the 10/22 wins hands down.

OBTW, the Ruger 10/22 is now also available in takedown configuration.

I had the Marlin 60 as a kid and it was a great "wander the river bottom, hunt rabbits and plink" gun. Stolen when the house was broken into when I was a teen. I have the 10/22 now. I think I would prefer the Marlin for hunting, but the 10/22 is a good "everything" rifle.

That said, I've always wanted a .22 lever rifle.

Me too. I bought a nice used Marlin Lever .22 last year. I guess I'm trying to replace some of the things I had, and sold at some point...and the memories associated with them. I'm leaning strongly toward the Marlin for that reason alone. My first gun was a Revelation 16 gauge, the second was the model 60.

I don't have a 60, but I have fond childhood memories of carrying a single shot 22 down to the woods with my back pocket full of 22 ammo.  The 60 seems to fit that picture best.

Most of my shooting is off the bench so I have a modified 10/22.

I tend to prefer the Marlin over the Ruger, but the 795 over the 60.  I've had all three, stilll have a 10/22 and a 795.   The 795 needs a little tweaking, especially if you buy additional mags.  The magwell runs a skosh tight on them, sometimes it's a little more of an issue of there being burrs in the magwell, nothing a a flat file can't fix.  I've also smoked the mags and lookded for the spots that are a little "rubby"....   Took the flat file to those as well.  Mags won't drop free, but they're a lot easier to change now.

I actually prefer the 60 to the 795. I have a 60, wife has a 795.

Even though they they are almost the same gun, I prefer the tube mag and the controls on the 60.
