Firearm insurance
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:33:11 AM »
I am looking for a firearm insurance policy.  My current renters insurance has a base limit of only like $2500 for firearms, and to extend that with a rider, they want a significant number of details (serial numbers, etc).

Does anyone currently have, or could recommend a firearm insurer that doesn't require (to initiate a policy at a certain $ value, obviously, upon a claim, proof would be required) serial numbers?  I am hesitant to put all that information in state farm's database, especially since my inventory changes all the time.

Basically, I'm looking for a place that will insure "Up to $X of firearms and accessories, currently stored in a safe, for $Y premium"

Advice?

Doesn't the NRA offer something along those lines?

My AAA renter' policy covers a flat amount, including firearms, with no detailed household data required.

IIRC, Erie doesn't treat firearms differently than any other private property and will cover them up to the limits of your policy.

When we had our break-in a few years ago, the couple guns that were taken were recovered, but one had some cosmetic damage.  Erie covered the damage in full without question, serial numbers, or anything.  The adjuster turned out to be a shooter as well. :)

I have a rider on our policy for an amount greater than the value of my firearm collection since it is in a state of flux. They didn't ask for any serial numbers, what I owned, etc. I just said I need $X for a firearm rider and they said no problem.

USAA has a "valuable personal property" policy that's super cheap and covers all my "important" property. Guitars/amps, camera gear, guns.

I think i pay 16 dollars a year or something absurd for about 8k in coverage.

EDIT to add: when you put all your property in the list, you put what it's worth and they pay it. So, for example... you got a deal on a gun? No problem. Put in MSRP. That's what they'll pay if that gun gets stolen.

On my music gear they also cover damage due to normal use. Since I play out in public, that could include drops, electrical problems, etc.

My home policy from Farmer's has something like that.  They didn't ask for details.  Just suggested I keep that information.

What the last three guys said. I have Farmers and simply requested an upgrade. I'd have to dig out the policy to see what it's called but it looks like different insurance companies have different names for it. No serial numbers or other identification required. I do have detailed photos of all my guns in case something ever happens to them and there is ever a question regarding their value.

Okay, does farmers do just the property coverage in a non-homeowners policy?  I am a renter.

Most insurance companies offer renter's insurance that provides most of the same coverage as homeowner's.  Even as a renter, you likely want the liability coverages as well.  Someone slips and falls in the apartment/condo, that is generally not the landlord's responsibility, but the tenant.

I had Farm Bureau Insurance when I lived in my house but they raised the rates when a renter was in there.  I now have USAA.  Both cover "household items" and they both listed my guns as household items.

I know, I have massive liability and other coverage.  The issue is State Farm requires serial numbers for doing a large value firearm rider, and I don't want that.

Thanks for this.  I had seen it before and thought about buying then, but I sent in my application today.

Do you know anyone who has had to file a claim with them?

Just updated our home insurance yesterday.

Full coverage of firearms if house destroyed by fire; $2500 limit for theft.

I can live with that.
