Taking mom's letter at face value and as being correct, there were several pooches screwed.  It is going to take quite a while to sort things out and figure who actually did what when, and then to see if their answer to "Why?" fits in with what everybody else said happened.

Initial news accounts are just so chock full of facts that a firm conclusion can always be drawn just on the information reported.  There is no reason to break out the folding chairs and popcorn.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

The police and the mother are both in the right.

Could the police have used a taser instead of a fire arm? I wouldn't be surprised to find out yes, it could have been used and nobody would have died THAT night.

Yet, if you are threatening the police after assaulting two other people earlier in the evening, the best thing you can do is drop your weapon and assume the position. I wouldn't count on getting tased over lead poisoning. To ask cops to use less lethal force in the face of lethal force is just inane. YMMV

For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Ron, did you by chance read the report that C&SD posted?  The kid didn't just threaten the officers...  They had gone in through a back entrance and were coming down a set of stairs when he *attacked* them with a 7" long steak knife.  One of the officers suffered a (minor) cut to his arm in the process of defending himself.  This punk was at bad breath distance when he got shot.  The officer used his off arm to block a downward stab that could have resulted in a serious injury or even death.

They entered because the apartment he was in (it was a large house divided into three different living areas) was connected to other areas of the house where (IIRC) the kids of a couple that lived in a different apartment were still in.  Additionally punk had been making statements that he wasn't going back to jail, they were gonna have to shoot him, etc....

Not a comment on this particular event, but cops these days seem to escalate tensions rather than spending time to calm people down. I suppose there are a lot of valid reasons for that, but you have to wonder sometimes.
If the mom really is telling the truth about the cops comments to the kid, he ought to be fired. But that is one of those he said/she said situations.
