At LGS. $409. Trigger is really sweet. Looks unfired. No visible wear.

CLOSELY check cylinder alignment and lock-up.  Only Taurus I ever had, had massive cylinder lockup issues.  A model 94, 9-shot .22.  So different product line.  But still... I'd much rather save the extra $50 necessary to step up to a Ruger.

Check each cylinder with hammer back, for rotational play.  If you can break the cylinder loose with the cylinder bolt engaged into any of the 6 notches of the cylinder, abort.

Also, use a pencil or something appropriate sized to check bore-to-chamber alignment, for all 6 chambers.  A 5/16 wooden dowel would work, at 0.3125 inches diameter.  11/32 would be better, at 0.34 inches, if you can find one.

Also cock the gun s-l-o-w-l-y while lightly dragging your finger on the cylinder - the locking bolt should still engage every notch in turn, locking the cylinder securely in every position.

Take a look at Jim March's revolver check-out drill, stickied at The Firing Line in the revolver forum, it works for new revolvers, too.

Can't help on the price check.
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

Got any feeler gauges?  Check the cylinder to forcing cone gap with the hammer locked back on all six positions.  IIRC, anything between 0.002 and 0.006 is good.  Anything outside of that is bad.  High precision or max velocity stuff you want 0.002-0.004.  High round count between cleanings or defensive work you want 0.004 to 0.006.

A set of feeler gauges should only cost you $3 or so at Autozone.

Interwebz hearsay says Gaucho not so good.  How user serviceable is it?  Anything like standard parts?  (I don't know SA revolvers at all, unfortunatly.)

I'd love to love a Taurus, but for a bit more $, you can get the real thing with a Ruger, S&W, or Beretta.

That is kind of my feeling.  For something I'll likely have for quite a long time, I want to stick with brands with a good reputation for quality.  The only exceptions would be if you know how to work on it or if you know you can resell for a profit.

That said, everyone has their own priorities.

Search and/or make inquiry at the TaurusArmed forum.    (Unfortunately I'm not seeing an advanced search feature that will let you limit the search to their "problems" subforum.)

$400 for a $5 paperweight doesn't sound like a great deal to me.

Bud's has one for half that price: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/411545388

If you're patient, you can find a Ruger Blackhawk for that price.

My good sir that is the shop that we only go to if we are looking to unload a shitty piece that no one else will buy, for they are gullible suckers who do not know jack *expletive deleted*. I'm pretty sure I cannot step foot back in there for two years or maybe three after the POS that I unloaded on them back in March of this year.

For the life of me I cannot remember what it was but one of the staff members said something that has to be the dumbest *expletive deleted*ing thing I have ever heard in a gunshop (and that's saying something) the last time I was in there. And he let loose a few other lesser gems, too whilst I was there.

I like pretty guns as much as the next guy but i really just want an SAA style gun with a little external wear so i dont feel guilty about dragging it through the woods. Its mostly going to live in the car probably. Not a bbq gun.

I would be ok with a uberti or ruger or whatever as long as its used which will bring it into my price bracket.

I 2nd the Ruger. Hold you money, be patient and one will come up in your price range.

Took me three years to find my latest rifle in the price range and condition I was wanting.

I will sit tight then. I haven't really done any sort of check of the area LGS's either so I may do that this weekend.

Thanks for the advice folks
