Penn Gillette on Sandy Hook

This is an old video, but I just found it and thought I'd share. I've been a big fan of Penn and Teller (and not for their magic show) since before the first episode of Bull****. I'm really impressed here by his ability to argue points and "speak their language."

- Argues on an emotional level
- Still gets salient, logical points across
- ZERO openings for counterarguments of "paranoia" and "gun nut."

Bravo, good Sir. Bravo.

“Fear of death increases in exact proportion to increase in wealth,” Hemingway once said. Today, many of us have become rich in the currency of cowardice. We have so many things and so few experiences. We are desperate to live as long as possible, not as large as possible. We are so afraid to say goodbye to the world that we never say hello.

He certainly handled that irrational, sound byte, feel good discussion. He very wisely did not make the error of trying to make his point with logic.  ;)

One of these days I really wish someone would pull a Howard Hughes, "excuse me, I'm speaking!" Talking over someone after asking them a question really annoys me.

I saw Bill O'Reilly do that once. Problem is he was the one doing the interrupting in the first place.  ;/

Nicole Lapin?

She looks to be maybe 25 years old. What -- exactly -- makes her a financial "expert"?

And even if she is (or, perhaps, especially if she is) a financial expert, how does that in any way qualify her to be on a panel discussing gun control? Gawd, she started right out with the lie that "semi-automatic weapons can easily be turned into machine guns." Hello? If you listen to her version, you get the impression that the kid at Sandy Hook used a machine gun, but if he had "only" used a handgun he wouldn't have been able to kill more than two people.

Tell that the the families of the victims at Virginia Tech and Fort Hood.

What a maroon.

"semi-automatic weapons can easily be turned into machine guns."

I suppose that statement is supposed to imply that you can't make a machine gun out of a manual action firearm, right?

Interesting.
John Moses Browning took a lever-action Winchester 1873 and made a full-auto gun; he did this to test a principle (to see if the gas pressure could be used to cycle the action).
I've never seen a bolt action converted that way before.

They'll just add bolt and pump actions to their ban list.

I'm content with their ignorance, and access to a cnc mill.

Wasn't that semi-auto, though?

Yes.

There are a few other designs though that converted bolt actions to automatic rifles.

I'm sure that it could be modified to full auto. Just pointing out an example of a bolt action converted to autoloader.

Beautiful, that's what.

Or someone trying to make a Lewis gun out of a Lee Enfield because it's 1916 and they've got plenty of the latter and not enough of the former.  :P

I'm not saying it's a bad gun, it's just...aesthetically challenged.  ;)
