Its linked to the EVE Online universe, similar deal for spaceships pilots. It is quite the deep rabbit hole for lore; 3 published books and a couple encyclopedias worth of other lore. 4 main empires, but vast expanses of free space where players have made their own empires. As part of territory acquisition the space pilots now hire the mercs to fight for them; the 4 npc empires also automatically generating contracts. Build up skills, buy better weapons, tanks sci-fi, helecarriers, and jeeps. And someday a horde mode to fight rogue AI drones. I have 5 accounts in eve online and run a player corporation and alliance so I can rant at some length. But in short, if you have a PS3, give it a try, you might like it.
