Lead Bullets Say What?
« on: March 29, 2013, 10:48:03 AM »
Interesting article on lead exposure in general and hearing loss. I was not aware of this particular result of lead exposure. I don't know how solid the research is based on this one MSM story, but it bears looking into. It does make me wonder if I've unknowingly contributed to my general hearing loss over the years.

I do 95% of my shooting outside and generally wear Nitrile gloves when I reload (though for many years I never wore hand protection and in my 20's, shot indoors a lot). I reload almost exclusively in hard cast lead for my pistols and my lever guns. Jacketed for everything else.

Huh  ???

I've spent a lot more time running chainsaws than shooting  ;/

Anyway, I guess it's a miracle that any of us bitter gun-clinging old farts are still around

It would be nice to see absorption/adsorpsion rates between lead from shooting and from reloading compared to injesting any of the stuff the twigs and berries bible is getting in an uproar about.  And then comparing the nerve damage from injested lead to the nerve damage from gunshots (protected as well as unprotected).

Working around high frequency sound crapped out my hearing long before I got into shooting more than the annual rifle qualification.  And neither of them turned my gums blue.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

nerve damage from gunshots

It's all dependent on shot placement  ;)

A few years after I started reloading and casting bullets, I had my blood lead levels tested....

Essentially so low as to be undetectable.

I might have it tested again in another 5 years or so for comparison.

I'd guess that the most hazardous reloading operation is handling spent brass and used tumbling media, I try to keep that under control.

LEO buddy about 40 yrs old. Handloads & shoots ALOT! Mostly lead, mostly indoors. I understand he often accesses the range at night, has a key, and shoots without turning on the fans. Recently had labs done. Got a cell call from his Dr. "I don't care where you are or what you're doing, get over here now!!!"  Lead level 83 :O I don't load or shoot alot but will get lead level next lab visit.

Stay safe.

For tumbling media, I switched to steel pins, so my only exposure is to clean soapy water :)

Considering that, not wanting to buy a rotary tumbler though. I'm so cheap, my secondhand big Dillon vibratory has done a few hundred thousand cases for $35.
