Question for Camera Geeks
« on: April 11, 2013, 04:58:06 PM »
Going on a lengthy vacation, would you rather take:

A Kodak Easyshare Z712 7 megapixel?

or,

A Nikon Coolpix S3100 14 megapixel?

I own both of these cameras.  Not particularly interested in buying another camera.

Observations on ownership:

1. The Kodak is easier to hold steady.  The Kodak seems to have better glass clarity.  The Kodak has a far superior zoom.  The Kodak has a brighter flash if needed.  The Kodak requires me to tote a battery charger along with it.  It won't charge the battery via USB connection to a computer.  The Kodak is heavier and bigger.  Not a pocket camera.
2. The Nikon is easier to always have on person, being much smaller.  The higher resolution can sometimes make up for the inferior zoom.  However, this camera has a dull spot in every image taken.  The Nikon will charge off of a USB connection to anything.

Granted, these pics are reduced rez hosted on Phototbucket, but you'll get an idea for each one with these.

Taken with the Kodak:

Taken with the Nikon:

Every pic taken with the Nikon has that dark spot in the top right corner, in exactly the same place.  No visible scratches or gunk on the lens to cause this.

I'm leaning far more towards the 7mp Kodak, despite its size and my limited cargo room.  Mostly due to that spot defect.

This is for a bike trip, right? I'd take the Nikon.

That spot from the Nikon would bug me and the Kodak has the better lens. Take the Kodak.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Nikon goes to Goodwill with that permanent spot.

The spot is probably from junk on your sensor. Is there any way to open the camera up to try to clean it off? I'm guessing not.

My usual advice is to bring the big camera, then use your smartphone for all the social work. The point-and-shoot digital is pretty much an anachronism, unless you want to actually use a point-and-shoot as your 'big camera' (some of them are damn good).

Obligatory "shoot some film while you can still get it" here.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.
