Converting laptop from 5400rpm HDD to SSD
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:07:32 PM »
I ordered one of these recently:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147189

Should be arriving today.

I'd like to image my current OS on my laptop in such a way that I can maintain my domain membership on my computer, all files/settings/installed apps/etc.  Don't want to reload the OS right now.

Computer is an ASUS R500A laptop running Windows 7 64-bit.

From what I hear, just ghosting using CloneZilla or similar tech ends up with problems.  Different SATA/BIOS settings that need to be tweaked and so on.

Samsung makes some software to use during the migration process:

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html

Anyone used this or similar HDD to SSD migration software?  Experiences?  Gotchas?

The cloning software that came with my HP ssd Worked well.

I ended up reloading the OS for different reasons, but the clone software was fine

I suspect the software provided with the SSD will work for you

Win 7 Pro, I assume?

Full backup using Windows backup.  Boot the Win7 install disk.   Use it to do a bare metal restore.

Or this. :-D

Samsung tool may be quicker.

Is the SSD just as big as the HDD?

If so, dumping the hard drive straight to the SSD should work?
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Used the manufacturer's (Samsung) software.  Took about an hour to image.

Swapped drives.

Holy fast, batman!

I think I got about 5-6 seconds to login screen, then after typing user/pass I wait another 5 seconds to have a full desktop and system tray and wireless IP address... that includes ALL the trickle-loading bullscat down in the bottom right side of the screen.  Less than a quarter second to open Word/Excel/Outlook/SqlMgmtStudio/VisualStudio.  Maybe less than 1/10th a second.  Blink and it's there.  Like it's been sitting in RAM from a previous session, not cached to page file at all.

Highly recommend SSD.  Wow.

This bleh cheap mid-grade laptop has been transformed by this one upgrade.  While I may have gone from 750GB of storage down to only 250GB, I still have 180GB free on my SSD drive.

How hard and costly would the change to SSD be on a MacBook Pro?
