Fighting the urge to buy a titanium bicycle....
« on: August 01, 2006, 02:27:54 PM »
I am a middle-aged recreational rider of both road bikes and MTB.  I have a nice full-suspension MTB and a nice double full Ultegra aluminum/carbon fork/carbon seatstays road bike that I bought last year.  Both of these bicycles more than meet my needs and possibly provide more performance than I can utilize.

I am not and never will be a racer or will be unseating Floyd Landis or Lance Armstrong any time soon.  So why do I longingly spend time on the Litespeed, Merlin and Serotta websites gazing upon titanium road bikes?  The weight savings would be negligible compared to my aluminum frame, and for my riding, weight doesn't really matter.  Could it be the strength?  The corrosion resistance?  The sheer beauty of brushed titanium?  And why don't I feel this way about carbon fiber?

Must continue to fight the urge......

I upgraded to a Litespeed from a Cannondale last year.  The price wasn't bad but it was sure as hell worth it for the ride.  The Ti is soooo much smoother.  Do it, man.  You won't regret it.

Reasons?
Ti rides better than other materials
Lifetime frame, you'll never have to replace
Because you can

Bikes are not my thing, but I have cosidered spending a couple thousand dollars on a rifle that is a pound and a half lighter than one I already own.  The reason this is so silly is I would be a lot better off shedding the equivalent of a couple entire rifles worth of weight from my middle rather than paring down the load in my hands.  But no, I want a lighter rifle as if that is what mattered!

In a moment of weakness last night, brought on by watching the auction for the past five days, I bought a 2005 low miles Independent Fabrications titanium Crown Jewel Ultegra for about $ 2100.   Do you think I will be happy with it?

A guy that rides with my group has an IF on order.  The frame is a few grand and the PLATINUM headbadge is a few grand more.  I don't remember the exact prices, but the combo will cost about $10k.  That's not a complete bike.

If you have the money and you want it, why not?  You earned your money, spend it however you think will best make you happy.  If that means buying an expensive bike, then go for it.

I was a bike messeneger for years, if you ride lots then you need a quality bike.

Dude, I am soooo jealous.  Not only did you buy a sweeeet ride.  You got a hell of a deal too.  I was thinking about making an IF my next upgrade, sometime in the future when I can justify spending that kind of cash.  Right now, I just don't get to ride enough to justify it.  Not only that but I couldn't afford if someone else paid for it.  Congratulations on a great deal.

I'm not sure a droopy, pasty white posterior with ugly tattoos is the right way to market a thong, but that's just me.

I have seen better-looking tattoos done by lifers in prison.  In solitary confinement.  Using dissolved M&Ms as dye and a sharpened tootbrush bristle as a needle.  But then again, consider the 'canvas' they had to work with.

It has a Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheelset, Chris King headset, Thomson seatpost, Race Face Cadence cranks, Race Face external bearing bottom bracket, Reynolds Ouzo pro carbon fork, San Marco Aspide Arrowhead saddle, Deda Piega handlebars, full double Ultegra drive train with Wipperman chain, Ultegra brakes and brifters.  I was drawn to the listing since the owner, who had it built custom, has some very similar measurements to me.  The frame is 55 cm center-to center with a standover height  of 31.75 inches, which will match my 32" bicycling inseam very well.  He did have it built with a 58 cm. top tube which may or may not be a little stretched out for me.  But it also has a Ritchey adjustable stem, so I figure that between the stem and the Thomson seatpost, I should be able to adjust things to compensate.  My current road bike is 56 cm center to top with a 56 cm top tube, so I don't think 7/8 of an inch or so in top tube length will make a lot of difference for my riding style.

A good friend of mine worked at a shop (Ti Cycles) that is the local IF dealer, and after looking at what I paid for the auction, told me that I got the bike for less than wholesale.  The frame and fork alone with the custom paint job would have retailed for slightly more than $ 3000.  The total retail of the whole bike would have been around $ 5,000.  The seller just had other bikes that he liked more and needed to thin the herd a bit.

Over on Bike Forums, I had recently read some threads about people on expensive bikes, and I saw an acronym that I found charming: ROBOT for Rich Old Bastards On Titanium.  It was then that I knew my life goal was to become a ROBOT.  Now I am one and I can die content.
