The only real conceit I can find fault with was the hyperbolic sun maneuver and gravity assist to escape the Solar System. Even with current 21st century tech, the photosphere of the sun would hide nothing, presuming we were interested in watching for it. We, or more appropriately our devices, stare directly into the sun 24/7, and either with filters or selective wavelengths have no trouble with it.
The relative scales are vastly different, but it's already attainable by skilled amateurs with terrestrial equipment. This gives the idea...

Something's got to give for good storytelling.
