Leather care
« on: May 15, 2013, 03:44:46 PM »
I've got a lot of dead bugs on my jacket.

So far I've been wiping them off with a cloth, but I worry that I'm going to ruin the jacket doing that.

What's suggested by the APS hive mind to clean and care for a leather jacket?

Stick to all natural solutions suited the material in question.

Find a cow and have them lick it clean.

Fiebings Saddlesoap and 100% pure Neatsfoot oil. Avoid anything with silicone in it, that can dry out the leather.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Get a block of saddle soap.

Pecard's Leather Dressing works nicely, as well. I use that for my US Wings jacket and leather (casual) shoes. You can generally go a long while between applications.

What finish on the leather?

I've been a fan of Lexol products for a long time.

As to wiping off the bugs, a damp cloth will do for the length of the road trip.

I used to use Lexol on my leather motorcycle seat and it was excellent for reconditioning the leather.

I tried Lexol first, and while it was okay, I find Pecards to be superior. It was, IIRC, more expensive, but I decided it was worth it (it worked far better on the whip than the Lexol did, and at least a little better on the shoes and jacket).

That's what our boot store recommended.  We'll see how it works over a period of years......

I avoid saddle soap, as I've heard it has detrimental effects on leather.

The trick isn't to figure out how best to clean it.  It's treating the leather so the bugs don't stick in the first place.  Again, what finish on the leather?

Um... black?  I dunno.  Doesn't say anything inside either.
