Rifle #3 is  an Arisaka Type 38. The double vent holes on top of the receiver and the mum are a dead giveaway. The type 38 also has a Japanese character under the mum that looks like 3 horizontal lines.

Rifle #1 is an odd one.
Its certainly started out as a GEW 98- no other model of rifle that I'm aware of had a lange rear sight.
The big oddity is the lever on the right side of the receiver, which might be a magazine cutoff, which isn't typical of a GEW 98- maybe a custom rifle?
The rear band looks like it has a nail head sticking out of it which is pretty typical of a surplused turk rifle.
I've seen a few GEW 98s that were reworked by the Turks, they sometimes kept the lange sight and had a mish-mash of turk and german stocks and hardware.

Nice!
Did this model normally have a mag cutoff? I've never seen a mag cutoff on a 98 before...

Does everything you touch turn to *expletive deleted*? ;)

Chris

I swear the rifles were like that before I got them. =D

rebuildable?  just looking at the amount of rust, and assuming the bores are similar, i'm going to say it's not economically feasible.   i'm also guessing that there was a reason for the bolts to have been removed before you acquired them.  unless you have some emotional attachment?

No emotional attachment. It not being economically feasible doesn't bother me. Could be a fun project, plus it would be cool to own a rare rifle even though they won't be the best looking ones out there.

Any help on how to clean up the rust?

Would that actually be chrome on the rifle? Seems odd to have it on the outside.

Electrolysis + phosphate (parkerizing) might salvage the metal, but there will always be a question of whether it is strong enough to withstand the pressures of firing.  Also, given the amount of rusting, you may not be able to seperate the basic pieces, and wind up with a big hunk of metal that just will not be rusting further.  That would not be a problem for a wall-hanger.

Chrome was the way to protect againt rain and corrosive salts.  It did have a significant drawback for use in combat, but made really pretty drill/ceremony rifles.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

There are a lot of ceremonial rifles out there that were chrome plated.

I know of many M1 Garands that received such treatment.

When I had to "dispose of" surplus Garand parts after base closure, I ended up taking them to a chrome shop.

Chrome shops can either plate an item, or un-plate an item by reversing the process.  That's a lot easier than trying to grind or bead blast the stuff away.

Makes me sad to think what this must of once looked like. :(

I need to look up instructions on how to do electrolysis. Also need to clean out the bore. Held one up to the light to look through it, and to my suprise it had some of those spider web ball egg sack things in it. The images that flashed through my mind... [barf]

the current crop of chinese type 53 rifles look nearly as bad as the best example of those 4 rifles but have bright shiny bores and are fully functional.  :P
