Photoshop strikes again, yet this time it's a little more serious. Photographer Adnan Hajj, who apparently has quite a reputation for blowing extra smoke into his images of war-torn Beirut, created the overdramatic photoillustration you see above. Reuters has yanked the image and suspended Hajj.

Even a non-designer could spot those sloppily-cloned plumes, and, if you look closer, on the left hand side, an entire building has been reproduced. Thanks to Kyle du Ford for the tip.

Update: Once again, bloggers broke the news.

Update: Mainstream media catches on, Hajj gets canned.

Reuters drops Lebanese photographer over doctored image

Sun Aug 6, 2006 5:56pm ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Reuters, the global news and information agency, told a freelance Lebanese photographer on Sunday it would not use any more of his pictures after he doctored an image of the aftermath of an Israeli air strike on Beirut.

The photograph by Adnan Hajj, which was published on news Web sites on Saturday, showed thick black smoke rising above buildings in the Lebanese capital after an Israeli air raid in the war with the Shi'ite Islamic group Hizbollah, now in its fourth week.

Reuters withdrew the doctored image on Sunday and replaced it with the unaltered photograph after several news blogs said it had been manipulated using Photoshop software to show more smoke.

Reuters has strict standards of accuracy that bar the manipulation of images in ways that mislead the viewer.

"The photographer has denied deliberately attempting to manipulate the image, saying that he was trying to remove dust marks and that he made mistakes due to the bad lighting conditions he was working under," said Moira Whittle, the head of public relations for Reuters.

"This represents a serious breach of Reuters' standards and we shall not be accepting or using pictures taken by him," Whittle said in a statement issued in London.

Hajj worked for Reuters as a non-staff freelance, or contributing photographer, from 1993 until 2003 and again since April 2005.

He was among several photographers from the main international news agencies whose images of a dead child being held up by a rescuer in the village of Qana, south Lebanon, after an Israeli air strike on July 30 have been challenged by blogs critical of the mainstream media's coverage of the Middle East conflict.

Reuters and other news organizations reviewed those images and have all rejected allegations that the photographs were staged.

A couple of years ago National Geographic very publically fired a photographer who had supposedly shot a series on African tribesmen who hunt bush elephants.

One shot showed a supposedly successful hunt.

Until someone wrote in and pointed out that there appeared to be inventory numbers written on both tusks.

The results of the hunt were a complete and total fabrication.

As usual, The Usual Suspects, the Main Stream Media over-look something important.

This guy may have photo-shopped a few images.  However he's staged many more photos to show Hesbollah in a more favorable light.

I am fairly certain that Reuters is complicit in this.  While they proport to have an exellent in house staff that knows their stuff, they did not catch this fairly simple photoshop escapade.  Worse, they initially denied it was doctored.  Only when badgered by independent sources, did they fess up, and 'fire' the muslim cameraman.  Note that that same camera man is already implicated in doctoring another pic Reuters showed, that of a dead child in Quaana.
Reuters is a Brit company, with a thinly veiled dislike of America and Isreal.  On the own website, they are still stating that America deliberatly killed several Reuters employees in Iraq.
I don't trust Reuters to present the facts.  I feel they cater to the Anti American/ Israel/ West Bias, so prevelant in the world today.

Well ... they are now.

Judging from their recent quality control, I'd say they wouldn't have the first idea what the difference between a good Photoshop job and the fifteen-second atom-bomb picture that I threw out there.

Reuters.   Couple of years ago, they had an ad in the commuter trains.  Something about "truth". . visual was a handoff between two runners in a relay.

Only problem was the photo showed the baton being THROWN from one runner to the other.  Now, even in high speed sprint relays, the baton is never thrown, it's placed, albeit quite quickly, in the runner's hands. . .

So I thinks to myself,  Self, if they can't even get this right (and they're advertising TRUTH for cyin' out loud), I don't have much faith in their reporting.   And it looks like I wasn't wrong. . .
