One of the bigger gun stores around here, that is in a rough part of town, has a sign on the door that says "Pants must be worn at waist inside"  Being private property I like that.

I am less excited about enshrining dress codes in law.  Yes I know we already have several, and I dislike the subculture that particular law is discouraging, but still there's plenty of good ideas that don't need to be a law.

Oh, I don't think it would hold up in court and seems like a waste of time.

But I would remind you, most municpalities do have laws covering appropriate dress, and this one falls in with laws about public nudity to an extent, so there is precedence.

I really just thought the mayor punning was funny.

I prefer private property dress codes even when some could be deemed racist. A bar back in my old city has very fine, probably undocumented, eastern european waitresses. But to the point they will also remove you from the premises if you wear a ballcap in any manner other than straight and centered.

Oh, what the heck!  Let's drag the discussion out a bit.

Ignoring all the rumors and urban legends about where and why the fashion originated - someone please explain to me (without making reference to the mental acumen of the practitioners or to the approval of persuing police officers) why the fashion trend continues.

I have not attended the court hearings, but a cop with whom I sometimes discuss the events of the week tells me that some arrests have been made based on the "lewed and lascivious behavior" law.

Quote
§ 18.2-345. Lewd and lascivious cohabitation.

If any persons, not married to each other, lewdly and lasciviously associate and cohabit together, or, whether married or not, be guilty of open and gross lewdness and lasciviousness, each of them shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor; and upon a repetition of the offense, and conviction thereof, each of them shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Quote
§ 18.2-11. Punishment for conviction of misdemeanor.

The authorized punishments for conviction of a misdemeanor are:

(a)
(b)
(c) For Class 3 misdemeanors, a fine of not more than $500.
(d)

For a misdemeanor offense prohibiting proximity to children as described in subsection A of § 18.2-370.2, the sentencing court is authorized to impose the punishment set forth in subsection B of that section in addition to any other penalty provided by law.

Apparently the police have found a General District Court judge that agrees with their assessment that fondling one's privates in public meets some definition of lewdness and/or lasciviousness.  As the ACLU does not seem to be involving itself, my guess is that the fines being levied are less than the maximum allowable.

Yes, it is a crying shame that it has fallen to the use of the law to enforce "social appropriateness" - but since logic, shame and/or ridicule seem unable to address trhe matter ....  Again, I am willing to adjust my views should someone convince me that this is merely the current iteration if duck-tails, pegged jeans and tight white t-shirts with the mandatory flip-top Marlboro pack rolled in the left sleeve.

Yep.
At first read, I was a bit alarmed about the passage of public dress codes, but in my mind's eye I can remember a lot of instances of people walking around in their underwear with the tops of their pants nearly down to the knees(1) as is the current fashion.

1-not exaggerating- if you can see the bottom hem of their underwear all the way around, they aren't wearing pants as they should be worn.

I was at dinner with the fam the other night and there was a fat chick directly behind my wife, seated sideways to us thank the deities, with her thong sticking out of the top of her jean shorts.

Unfortunately, also not an uncommon sight. <shudder>
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

When they say that they are talking about 1% Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs/MCs colors (3 piece patch and various club patches) which are worn on a vest or "cut"

Seeing as how every color is associated with one gang or another, I would think this would be difficult to enforce.
