I was travelling in Bangladesh and there was a forest with called SundarBan and it is the largest mangrove forest in the entire world. I was inside the jungle and suddenly the whole sky become black and i was quite lost at that very moment as well. I have found something not regular. You know what i mean..

Well, actually - No.  Tell us more.

*chuckle* you know, a lot of time when these old threads pop up and it shows I posted, I have to look and see what it was.
But this one, I knew exactly what it was.

Good ol' Northwest, the one and only Possum hound. Me and Dad where talking about him just today. :)

I do that with threads I posted in 10 minutes ago ???

Apparently raccons are tougher then possems. Dad must have taken out a dozen over the course of several years.
His dog, Northwest, would roust them from under the trailer amd tree them. Dad would shoot them with his AR-7 and when they fell, Northwest would walk over and lift his leg on the things.

Dads other weapon of choice was a shovel upside their heads.

My dad took out one with a 5lb mini-sledge once, tossed it like Thor and hit the bastard from like 20ft away.  At that moment, I swear, there was a halo of light around the man.

That being said, if I lived where I could shoot them, weapon of choice would be a suppressed 45 carbine/SBR.  Quiet, and a 45 JHP is pretty sure to put down a raccoon.

I hit a possum full on with a splitting axe once, and it flew about 4 feet, and it hit my mom's dog square in the side.  Poor pup thought she was being attacked by a demonic ninja beast, and hightailed it outta there. LOL

I usually go at them with a 22WMR and it usually does the trick. Actually, would rather wound them real bad so they crawl off into the bushes and die somewhere away from the house, so I don't have to dispose of the carcass.

Took out 7 in one night (all dead) one time. 7 good raccoons!

Coon hunters around here use .22LR or .22WMR. Headshots are the deal. I don't get coon hunting, not going to eat them and pelts sell for not much, I guess it's just a good excuse to center dogs, trucks, guns, alcohol, and being away from the missus around one activity.

Also as been said, there's a big difference in 22 ammo made for shooting critters and bulk plinking stuff. Plinking stuff works fine for squirrels and gophers, anything bigger steps into dedicated hunting ammo IMO.

Since posting this a year ago, I have allegedly whacked two more. One was a one-shot kill with the .22 - daylight head shot. The other was an early morning half-awake experience. Mrs. B woke me from heavy slumber, having treed the beast. I grabbed the M-4gery and dispatched it with a 62-grain hollow-point in the neck.

I do have to add that the thing that woke this thread from the dead was a bit odd...

What was Mrs. B doing outside treeing raccoons?  =D

Nothing like some thread necrophilia to get things kickin.

I was going to avoid touching it, but ...

I'm a little nervous about shooting a .22 up into a tree, let alone a center fire rifle  =|

One time I did shoot a porcupine in a tree with a 30-30 but I aimed so the trunk was a backstop.  It took a pretty big chunk out of the tree after whacking the prickle-pig.  (just to be clear, it was the porcupine in the tree, not me - and I had the 30-30, not the porcupine  )

I'm thinking a shotgun for this sort of thing.

Isn't that for shooting straight up only ???

For a 30-45 degree ballistic trajectory the velocity is likely to be a lot greater.

You are responsible for every bullet you shoot  :O

This is not what they taught us at shooting camp...

However, I'm pretty sure they intentionally taught us a few things wrong anyway. Sometimes, answering "Why?" with "Because I say so!" just isn't enough.

Well, that's a good point with a rimfire  ;)

Anything bigger - well, centerfire bullets usually go right through deer so I don't think a coon is a backstop.

So stand directly under the little bugger when shooting. Just get out the way real fast unless you want a new coonskin cap.

Never did much raccoon hunting but there were times when I wish I could have.  One apartment I used to live at bordered an undeveloped nature preserve/park.  I went to throw my trash in the dumpster once barefoot in a tshirt and shorts.  As soon as the bag hit the dumpster, about 8 big, chubby raccoons pilled out of the dumpster.  They just hightailed it across the fence.  They probably were back in 5 mintues.  Barefoot with no weapon, I figured if they would have showed their teeth and came at me, I would have run away pretty quick.  No shooting in the parking lot so there wasn't much I could do.

Yeah, the Mythbusters thing only proved that a bullet shot straight up didn't have enough velocity on the way down to do anything. The lower the angle shot, the more likely it would do some damage. I think they referenced several cases of people being killed by "celebratory" shooting.
