Blog about chemistry and STEM jobs
« on: July 27, 2013, 11:50:25 AM »
I was on the American Chemical Society website and saw a reference to chemjobber.blogspot.com.  It is an amateur blog by a chemist detailing current jobs and the difficulty of finding work as a chemist nowadays.  Some interesting posts about how the only STEM jobs these days that are hiring are computer science, and some engineering jobs.  Physical and life sciences are the pits when it comes to finding work, especially for Ph.D.s with postdoc experience.

I was bummed reading it.  I could not find work with my master's in analytical chemistry back in 1982 during the recession back then, and ended up going the legal route.  Sad to see that some 30 odd years later, things are still difficult in my original field.

My nephew graduated with a BA in computer science last year from Washington State University, not really one of the top schools in the field, and after one year of working at Boeing, is making $ 65K.

My nephew is a chemical engineering student currently doing research on new battery technology. He had his choice of research positions and seems pretty optimistic about employment.
I s'pose the 35 on his HS ACT doesn't hurt.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

I have heard similar. However, I know the oil&gas industries are hiring chemical engineers, at least in certain areas.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

An interesting graphic from the chemjobber site.  STEM jobs really are computer tech and engineering. Huh.
