One-upping White Horseradish: Holy Trilogy on Laserdisc
« on: July 30, 2013, 05:08:48 PM »
I have laserdiscs.

Of the Holy Trilogy:  Star Wars.

There are no DVD's in existence of the Trilogy wherein Han shoots first, as is canon.

The laserdiscs I have are the highest quality products I am likely to get my hands on with Han shooting first.

I wish to author ISO's of the laserdiscs I have and create DVD's from them.

How might I do this to yield the best possible product?  I do not have a laserdisc player.

You can pick up laser disc players on ebay for a reasonable price. I also have quite a few laser discs that I want to move over to DVD.  I already have a couple of players, so I just need to figure out how to do it. Remember, I was one of the low leaders in the geek quiz.  ;)

Want to sell or loan me one of your players?

I have a computer with an ATI All-in-wonder TV capture card.  I think its peak resolution for capture is 480p, but that's all that most laserdisc players will output anyways.

I want to know how to take the current menu system from a Star Wars DVD, strip the actual movie out of it, keep the menus, and put the laserdisc movie meat in its place.

I had the set.  Paid a fortune for it (it was the mega set, not the "regular" special box set edition).  Sold it along with the player and over a hundred discs for an even $100 about five years ago.  Good discs, too.  Collector editions when they were available or, at the very least, the CAV versions.

Best I remember the audio is good.  But compared to a DVD the video is, at best, okay.  There is added resolution compared to VHS, sure, but the resolution only makes some of the unaddressed FX problems worse.  One standout is FX mattes.  They were painfully obvious on my higher-end SD TV, I can only imagine how distracting they will be on an HD screen.  Even a crummy one.  It's nice to see the original versions, but sometimes old is just old.

Maybe now that Disney owns the rights they'll put out DVDs or Blurays of the originals, minus all the CGI BS that Lucas inserted.

You mean the cartoon company will remove the cartoony elements from the movie? ???

I've read that in the process of adding all that CGI BS, Lucas altered the actual original film from the original trilogy. If true, there will be no re-mastering of the original onto DVD or Bluray.

The extant DVDs of the original unaltered trilogy were sourced from the Laserdiscs, and so aren't of terribly great quality.

If there's one thing The Mouse likes, it's money. And a non-CGI'd Star Wars trilogy would sell like hotcakes.

Unless this is true:

Then we're screwed.  :'(

Has there ever been a laserdisc data drive that interfaces via PATA or USB?  Maybe even an older interface like LPR?

Not that I know of. Laserdisc was analog video. Very good analog video, but analog nonetheless. Some last-gen discs and machines had digital audio tracks, but that's about it.

George Lucas didn't screw up the gunfights in that one.

And I got those out of the $5 bargain bin at Walmart, on DVD.  So I'm set.

And you are wrong.

Fistfully wrong.

Yes there are.  I bought a tin box set at Best Buy a few years ago that had the original theatrical versions of IV/V/VI on DVD along with the newest rejiggered versions from Lucas.  I don't know if they're still available, but they do exist.

edit:

Here's a reference to it on wookiepedia.  It appears the discs I have were in fact mastered from the laserdiscs.
