Any good replacement for a Kindle?
« on: August 04, 2013, 09:47:17 PM »
My Kindle crapped out this morning.
I was up reading late last night and it functioned perfectly, but when I tried to turn it on today, it showed the screensaver with a bunch of white gridlines running through it. Attempting a reset did nothing. I spent the last 2 hours searching online for a solution, but it seems that if a reset doesn't do it, the unit is fubar due to a manufacturing/design issue with the screen. Apparantly this is very common as I sifted through 100s of stories of the exact same thing happening to others with the same model of kindle.

I read that Amazon will replace it if under the 1 year warranty (I've had mine for about 2 years) or will offer to sell you a refurbished model for $70-80.

I can read my books on my phone, but that sort of sucks...

Any e-readers out there worth considering that aren't kindle/nook?

Check cowboom. I think it's Best Buy's refurbished/used site. I got a used kindle touch for 30 or 35 bucks. Looks perfect,  works the same.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Pick your favorite platform.  You can get Kindle software for iPad, Android, Windows, Mac.  For non-DRM'd books, Calibre will translate them from .mobi to whatever other format you want.  There are tools you can download to remove the DRM from Amazon Kindle books but it's not legal in the US.

I just had my ASUS Transformer android tablet crap out on me.

I didn't want to eat another $300+ on a high end tablet.  But I was invested in the e-reader platform with several open format and kindle publications.

So, I got one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BU9YJ7A/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Not bad for $80.

Not nearly as powerful in the CPU as the Transformer, but then again it's also 1/4 the cost.  And it does videos, netflix, and everything else just fine.

I use the Nook app but I've been very happy using my Google Nexus 7 tablet as an e-reader.

Cowboom? Shouldn't they be selling Gateway computers?

I've got the NOOK Simple Touch.  About $70.00.  I like it a lot.

Called Amazon, they told me there isn't anything they could do about it.
Offered to sell me a refurbished kindle for $47 or a refurbished kindle Paperwhite for $87.  ;/
I looked on ebay for spare parts. There were a lot of kindles with broken/defective screens, but none where the screen was intact. A few screens either 'new' or salvaged were for sale, but for $50+.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is only around $180, and will do everything you want and more, if you wish.  I have the 4G LTE version (with Verizon), which was $280, but it is worth the extra cost to be able to do mobile data.  I like it, a lot, and the very first app I got for it was the Kindle. :)

I might consider a tablet. My son has a nexus 7, which is pretty nice, but I'm not sure I want one for myself yet.

No, you can still use a Kindle with a broken screen as a flash drive.

If you intend to use it just for reading books there really isn't anything as good for that as a Kindle, especially the paperwhite version. I like tablets for what they are, but reading on them is like reading a pdf of a book on a computer screen. Stuff dies, even the best stuff from the best companies. Doesn't seem like a reason to reject the tech.

Who knows? Maybe there is a way to download an Amazon book to your computer and then download that to the NOOK. ??? I'm a Luddite when it come to this stuff.  So far most everything I want to read is on B&N other than Correia's books.  I buy them from Larry or from Uncle Hugo and Larry personalizes them for my library, so I'm content so far.
In a year or so maybe some kind of tablet will be cheap enough and simple enough for me and I'll buy one.

Unfortunately, Kindles seem to be prone to this sort of malfunction. I've had two Kindles in four years die the exact same way. I'm not sure I'm going to buy another one because of it. They are very nice in most other respects, but Amazon seems to be ignoring their durability problem.  =(
