How to clean exhaust pipe chrome?
« on: August 09, 2013, 11:53:53 AM »
Back in mid-June, I'm in Dayton, Wyoming about to climb into the Bighorns and Yellowstone.  I stop at a gas station and top off the tank, and I get out a neck-scarf doohicky from my luggage because it's getting pretty cold.

While putting on all my gear, the scarf falls off my seat and lands on my exhaust pipe.  I don't notice it at first.

Exhaust pipe is hot, because I'd been riding all day from Deadwood that morning.

I finally notice the scarf fell off the seat and onto the exhaust pipe.  I pull it away from the pipe, but the synthetic fabric had burned and melted onto the pipes.

I have yet to try anything to get this stuff off my pipes.  It's burned on pretty hard at this point, like a hard plastic.

Anyone know of anything that will loosen this stuff up but leave the chrome alone?

Might want to try one of the plastic dish scrapers that you use to get stuck-on food off of pots and plates.  Since it's plastic, it shouldn't scratch your chrome.  Depending on how much it has burned on, you could also try lightly heating the residue with a lighter and wiping it off while it's soft.  Final option is to burn it off, but you'll end up leaving crap on the chrome.
No, I'm not mtnbkr.  ;)

GooGone for the plastic guck (it may take a while).  0000 steel wool for the discoloration.  Chrome polish for the shine.

Best way might be acetone or tolulene to actually unzipper it at the molecular level.

a brand new razor blade to carefully scrape it off, then use a chrome polish like Turtlewax's.

My wife chose to wear Keds while riding on the back of my Shovelhead years ago.

She accidentally rubbed them against the rear exhaust pipe, and that horrible burning smell let her know immediately what went wrong.

I used a razor blade and green Scotchbrite pad with baking soda to get it off, then Blue-Off chrome polish to bring it back to a nice shine.

I've long since, however, given up trying to remove the blue color nearest the cylinder heads on my drag pipes.  They will always turn that color over time.

Better to just live with it.   =D

I wonder if a bore cleaner you use to clean the shot wad residue out of a shotgun would work...
