No arguments here.

And not for an instant should anyone construe this to mean drug abuse is a good thing, normal, or "fine", in any way shape or form.

Just that we are harming ourselves even more with this approach to fighting it.

The prohibition analogy, well not even realy an analogy, just an equivalency is absolutely spot-on. I've worked in one capacity or another as a contractor at Miller Brewing for the past seven years. There are certainly drunk drivers and alcoholics in the world, but I've never once had to duck a bullet from Anheiser-Busch...

The only people I see in favor of maintaining the status quo in the WoD are those benefitting from it either in funding (gov/LE) or profits (suppliers). All the rest of us are caught in the middle.

It may be that the people you see are more astute than most, but my observation is that there is a huge pool of people a wide political spectrum who are simply unable to make the intellectual distinction between moral sanction of, and the lack of government prohibition of substances they believe are immoral to ingest recreationally.
