Archaeologists find Mongolian mummy
From correspondents in Berlin
August 25, 2006 04:43am
Article from: Agence France-Presse

An international group of archaeologists has unearthed a well-preserved, 2,500-year-old mummy frozen in the snowcapped mountains of Mongolia complete with blond hair, tattoos and a felt hat.

The president of the German Archaeological Institute, Hermann Parzinger, hailed the "fabulous find" at a press conference to present the 28-member team's discovery in Berlin.

The Scythian warrior was found in June at a height of 2600 metres in the Altay Mountains in an intact burial mound or kurgan.

Mr Parzinger said the tomb was practically untouched when the team discovered it.

"We just had to sweep away some dust and could begin," he said.

Researchers said the most striking feature about the man was his light blond hair, which Mr Parzinger acknowledged may have yellowed after his death.

The man, who was apparently well-off, was cloaked in a beaver-skin coat with sable trim and sheep's wool lining that was in remarkably good condition, and still intact skin on his upper body revealed tattoos.

Two horses with elaborately decorated saddles and bridles, weapons and wooden, clay and animal horn vessels were placed in the tomb alongside the corpse to accompany the warrior into the next life.

The recovered items are currently in storage in Ulan Bator.

Mr Parzinger said even the contents of the horses' stomachs would be examined to offer insights into the region's vegetation two centuries before Christ.

Mr Parzinger said that until now remains of the Scythians, who were Iranian nomadic peoples, had only been found on the Russian side of the Altays.

He said the new find showed that their territory was much broader than first thought.

He said the ice had helped preserve the mummy and his belongings, and noted that global warming also posed a threat to such archaeological finds.

He said that if the trend continues, in 20 to 30 years there would be no more ice kurgans.

I do find this interesting from the archeological perspective, BUT, can scientists who are not astrophysicists or paleoclimatologists refrain from throwing "global warming" into every article and talk they give, or is that now a requirement for grant money from NGOs?

Seems to me that "global warming" would make more such finds easier.

This is exactly the kind of story I LOVE seeing on Discovery, History International, or the Science Channel.  I've seen similar documentaries on Utse, the caveman found in the Tyrolian Alps.  Through forensic archaeology, they have discovered an AMAZING amount of information about how he lived, and how he died.

I hope to hear the same about this Scythian fellow.

Why?

Global melting has already caused a big impact in the archaeological community.

Yes, it does make things like this easier to find, but it also has caused some to be badly damaged or lost.

Discovery, History International, or the Science Channel
I used to be a TLC, History, Science, and Learning Channel junkie, but getting four minutes of commercials for every six minutes of programming finally became too much. I actually timed it just to make sure I wasn't being hypercritical. Only get 20 minutes of programming per half hour slot. Bah. I started taking satellite programming so I didn't have to put up with this kind of mess. Heck, I've even begun flipping on network TV occasionally just to keep from having to sit through yet another Bowflex commercial.

I'm always amused by how, when they first found him, all the documentaries characterized him as a simple shepherd who must have been tending his flock up there on an unseasonably warm winter day, gotten caught in an unexpected snowstorm, fallen asleep and frozen to death. The facts are, of course, very different, and much more interesting.

Doubtful that Otzi was a caveman.

By the time that he lived Europeans were well into building established villages.

If they're talking about climate change in direct relation to what they're doing, and not throwing it out as politisized "global warming " I don't have a problem with it. The way I read this article though, it was thrown in at the end as an "oh yeah, Global Warming hurts me". Too many scientists with no background in the relevant physics and physical sciences relative to climate keep saying "Global Warming this, Global Warming that" without knowing what the hell they're talking about, and the general public (plus Al Gore), because these people are "scientists", too readily jump on their bandwagon.

To me, throwing the buzzword out only took away from what is otherwise a fascinating discovery. And to stick with Dannyboy's theme  -- would they have found this guy if he were still under 100' of ice?

I think you're being overly sensitive to what is being said in the article.

He's directly correlating a current, ongoing event with his profession.

He's not getting into who or what may or may not be causing global warming.

I do not buy into the global warmer theories either - and it is irritating to see it injected into every piece of subject matter when a piece of ice melts somewhere.

sounds cool and I'd like to hear more about it.  Maybe between all the other new stuff on discovery they can actualy fit some science stuff in agian?

Not that American hot rod and what not aren't cool, but I remember the stuff Discovery used to have that sure aint it.

I'm wondering about the term scythian though, to my knowlage the Scythians only went about as far East as Iran or so, not all the way to Mongolia.  Very similar peoples but still different, I'm more up to date on their decendants the Sarmatians though so I could be a bit off.

As to the global warming I am tired of hearing scientists complain about it.  The Earth goes through heating and cooling cycles and we are actualy overdue for another hot cycle of the Earth.
That is all. *expletive deleted*ck you all, eat *expletive deleted*it, and die in a fire. I have considered writing here a long parting section dedicated to each poster, but I have decided, at length, against it. *expletive deleted*ck you all and Hail Satan.

Or when it rains. Or doesn't rain. Or is hot. Or is cold. Or isn't hot enough. Or cold enough. Or there are hurricanes. Earthquakes. Tornados. Tsunamis.  Cyclones. Volcanos.  Or lack of all the beforementioned.

I swear the look on the CNN meteorologist's face was classic when some vapid (I think it was Darin Kagin) newsreader said to him (in reference to whatever the event he was referring to was) "so that is because of global warming right?" He sort of hemmed and hawwed and finally settled upon "we don't really know" when it was obvious what he wanted to say was "shut up idiot, just read what's on the damn teleprompter!"

Same here. I think it's bunk. We've barely broke the 50 F mark all summer.
If there is a climate change going on, it's cyclic as it has been for millions of years and there isn't squat we can do about it except adapt or die.
