I was a stagehand and ran lights in high school and college for free.  I should have skipped the whole chemistry/law/business/risk management gig and gone to Carnegie Hall.

Sounds like appropriate compensation for highly skilled production managers in an historic and popular venue.

Do you think Grand Ole Opry, or Yo Yo Ma (not to be confused with Yo Ma Ma), or any of the top musical performers likely to play Carnegie wants to work with a stage/light/audio engineer that only makes $50k?

I'm guessing that similar gigs at equally high profile venues are commensurate in salary.

An aside, it's kinda funny looking at the Carnegie schedule and seeing my name playing in October.  1 letter mispelled, but still. =D

  • What if we tried more?
Dropping a lighting boom accidentally could easily cost around that much, depending on what was on it. Dropping a lighting boom on a famous performer would cost a lot more. ;) Good stagehands are invaluable.

  • I spent a week in that town one night....
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

An old high school friend of mine got into lighting production in NYC, and made it pretty big. I don't know what he makes, but his brother tells me it's a lot.

new york unions are special
It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.

My friend that does taxes handles quite a few for stagehands.  They generally have 20-40 W-2's each year for the different jobs/productions they work on.  They  make good money $100K plus a year, if they have a good year moving from show to show.  However, sometimes it can be a lot less, if there's no work/shows going on.
