3.0 automatic 4wd pretty much loaded I think. Off road package. Nice clean frame. 155,000. I'm reading tranny horror stories online so I'm wondering how prevalent they were. Any other horror stories are welcome too! lol

Not a fan of the chain drive transfer case. Even with good maintenance and not using the 4wd much, it exploded at about 140K miles in my sisters Exploder. Locked up and took out the output shaft of the tranny. Couldn't find a tracsfer case to match in any boneyard in 4 states, apparently they changed every couple years. Finally found one that worked, but it wasn't the same year so there was no place for the speedo sensor. Sold it right after that with no speedo and a P0500 code in the OBD2.
A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Dammit... Cool thanks!

In that case, what the hell small 4x4 out there would be the least problem prone?

Not a fan of the chain drive transfer case.

Most transfer cases these days are chain drive.  Easier and cheaper to make than gear units.

If it's not been abused and isn't making any strange noises, you're probably okay.  As bedlamite hinted, the transfer case can be a little weak, but IIRC there is a pretty healthy aftermarket following, and replacing the seals and bearings to freshen up the unit is decently cheap.  The 3.0 engine is bulletproof so long as it's been serviced regularly.

Count on changing the belt idler and tensioner.  Even if they aren't making noise they are cheap and easy.  Might as well swap em for the peace of mind.  Same goes for the water pump since you'll be down in that vicinity anyway if you swap out the tensioner.  Other than that, just the generics... check the suspension bushings, make sure all the control arms and steering gear is tight, brake rotors/pads, etc. etc.

We talked to a few of my daughter's mechanic friends and they said pretty much the same thing, if it sounds ok (which it does) it'll probably be ok. $5000 plus a rotten old 95 F-150 and a junk wagoneer. Thanks for all the input guys ;)

The transfer case blew out on my 1999 XLT.  It would have cost more to fix than the truck was worth, so I disposed of it and got a 2006 Focus ST (gas was $4.30/gal at the time)

Other than the gas mileage, I loved that truck.  There was just something about it that made it a better fit for me than a 150.  If I could afford a second car for short trips/dump runs/moving furniture, I would get another one.  It's no longer in production in the US though, correct?

I had an '01, though it was 2WD, and a stick.  And it had the 2.4l 4-cyl.  If I hadn't had kids (or stopped at 1) I'd likely still have it.

The Ranger is no longer being manufactured and sold in the USA.  The global market Ranger is selling like hotcakes elsewhere though.  I would sure be interested in getting one:

Guy at work has a 2005. I asked, and he said he's at 140,000 miles. Needed basically routine maintenance, no major problems. Had to replace both front hubs somewhere north of 100,000 miles ... which is normal for those sealed, unitized hub/bearing units. He doesn't know what kind of gas mileage he gets. He doesn't even know what size tires he has. I asked that awhile ago, and his answer was "16 inch."

Okaaaay.

Thank god. Means I got a chance at getting an F-150 at work once our Rangers die.

I'd actually consider that world-market Ranger if they sold it here.

My 2001 S-10 is getting long in the tooth, and the recent batch of F-150s, Rams, and Silverados look so huge and bloated...
