Best Penetrating Oil & Anti-Seize Compund
« on: October 05, 2013, 07:38:22 PM »
Howdy:

Gonna take a whack at some old spark plugs and an O2 sensor.  I figure I'd give the threads a soaking in penetrating oil a few days before I get after them with a socket.

What is the best penetrating oil for that?  I Suspect the answer is not WD-40,

And for the new ones, what is the best anti-seize compound?

Regards,

For the penetrating mojo I like PB Blaster

I'll second that emotion ♫ ♫

As for anti sieze compound, I think about any commercially available (such as This) should suffice.

PB blaster or Kroil for penetrating oil. For anti-sieze on plugs I use Permatex copper.

what he said, that and a good torch if you can get one in there (beware of fire if you blast them first!). letting the pb sit for a day or a week can help as well.
how long since you've had them out?

PB blaster is my favorite penetrating oil.

Anti-seize, anything works, but for the O2 sensor you might want to go for some of the high-temp stuff, and also confirm that it is O2-sensor safe. I hear lots of common chemicals will kill O2 sensors pretty bad.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

PB blaster.

Any O2 Sensor safe high temp copper anti sieze will do the trick. Permatex is probably the most common brand, and a big tube will go a long ways.

I *expletive deleted* hate O2 sensors, spark plugs, and exhaust manifold bolts...

And this thread reminds me that it's probably getting towards that time to pull the plugs, regap them, put on fresh anti-seize, and reinstall them. Last time I pulled them I was blessed that they came out without a hitch and I did put a healthy amount of anti-seize on each of the new ones I installed.

What others have said: PB and permatex copper.

I'll ad that it's pretty common for O2 sensors to come with a dollop of safe anti seize preinstalled on the threads.

PB blaster is good, I use a lot of it, but that's mainly because Kroil is hard to find in local retail arenas.

I'm so contrarian that I didn't respond to the thread.

I will beat the different drum here, and suggest Oil of Wintergreen. Plus, it smells good. But, in several tests I have seen or read, the hands down best penetrate/loosening solution was a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. The only downside to the ATF/acetone is it does get a little flammable, and you do not want to get it in your eyes.

Agreed. Kroil is the best, but PB Blaster is much more readily available.

I usually try "Ed's Red" first.  Mostly because I've always some on hand. I don't know if its the best but I don't usually need to try another. I make my "Red" w/ MEK rather than acetone.

Do not heat up things you have applied penetrating oils to!

Penetrating oils like Kroil, etc release some very ,very nasty fumes when heated,  really nasty stuff that will make you cough and feel short of breath for a few days. Even in really small doses.

kroil or silicroil is damnear magic. I went thru a case of it while restoring a 1927 model T ford.

PB while good, stinks to high heaven.

What I have used is Ballistol.

I have had good results with Rem-Oil and Breakfree, still Ballistol has proven itself to work the best.

PB Blaster is what I use, If I think it is going to a stubborn part I spray it on a few days before I need to wrench.

I've similar luck with Liquid Wrench but I can't seem to find that anywhere.

Also used ATF and kerosene mix in the past.
