No, not that.

The carrier named after the accidental President.

One of the major "improvements" is they took away the steam catapults and have installed the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). My brother in law is an engineer at General Atomics, if it wasn't for this and some medical stuff they are working on, they would be in a lot worse shape than they are now.

Well, between the nuclear power, and like ducks and wood, it floats, the supercarrier is therefore a witch...

Wow, I wonder what is the cycle time of an EM catapult as compared to steam.  I would imagine that taxi time of the aircraft and shuttle attachment is still the time-limiting bottleneck of the launch process though, and not the catapult cycle.

I'm sure it will trip over something during its launch....

Carriers are impressive machines. If you've never been up close to one do so at your earliest opportunity.
I remember mooring at the carrier piers at Norfolk for some reason or another. Climbing up out of the hatch with a Nimitz class Super Carrier tied up across the Pier you just keep looking up and up and up and up...

My first duty station out of AE "A" school was ships company onboard the USS Forrestal. The first time I arrived at pier 12 in Norfolk the Forrestal was on one side and the USS America was on the other. The canyon they made between them was pretty impressive, and windy. As a young pup straight off the farm (nearly) it was quite an impressive sight.

When were you on the Forrestfire in Norfolk? One of the wife's brothers was on it when it was in Norfolk in 1991 (I think). He freeloaded off of us most of the time he was there
Maybe you knew him, there was what, only 4-5000 men on board? =D

I took my first stroll down Pier 12 to board the Forrestal in 1972, I left her in 1975 while on a Med cruise.

What's with the protective edging on the props?  Are they seriously afraid someone will slice themself in half walking past them

stay safe.

I think I'll run down to the Denver Docks and take a look at  Colorado's new carrier, the CSS Lark Bunting.  The Colorado Navy is very proud of this new vessel.
