Biggest Swimming Pool in the World
« on: October 27, 2013, 09:36:34 PM »
Holy crap! 2/3 of a mile long, and 150' deep at the deepest point. Apparently you have to boat between the floating bars. I'm not normally a "sit by the hotel pool on vacation" kind of guy, but I think i could spend a whole week's vacation sitting at this pool! :)

Makes it a little hard to get to the beach.
I get making it huge and all but why build it so deep? Seems like it would be impossible to build with the ocean right there.

They have swimming pools next to the swimming pool!  Guess that's for the hydroagophobic.

Two pictures with wimmins in them, and not one bikini.  How do they expect to attract guys to vacation there?

Pulled up Google Maps of this place.  What's funny is that just to the south of this pool, there's another pool by three high-rise buildings that looks to be at least 250 yards long, maybe more.  Guess this is the land of the giant pool...

This is next to Santiago. I visited up by Antafagasta and Iquique, the Pacific ocean felt uncomfortable cold, even in late summer (February). I got into the water during some downtime in Iquique just to say that I did. But the water was so miserably cold on that 82deg day, that I immediately got back out and headed back to the hotel and its nice pool.

According to NOAA, Iquique waters have an annual mean of 18C (~65F)
Santiago area looks to be about 15C (~59F)

I’m not saying I invented the turtleneck. But I was the first person to realize its potential as a tactical garment. The tactical turtleneck! The… tactleneck!

It's filtered seawater, so no chlorine.

According to the wikipedia article it is treated somehow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Alfonso_del_Mar

ETA: Popular Mechanics article referencing the pool

Quote
It all started with Fischmann's filtration system. Any pool owner knows the pain of keeping one clean, but Fischmann was working on a different scale. The largest pool made by his company, Crystal Lagoons, was built for the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile: It contains enough water to fill 6000 ordinary swimming pools, Fischmann says. Cleaning it the way you would your backyard pool would require 6000 standard filters and another 6000 doses of chlorine. Fischmann put his biochemistry skills to work figuring out a more practical solution.

The resultant water treatment system, which took six years to develop, is composed of only two steps. "You need permanent application of chemicals and then a filtration system," says Fischmann. The Crystal Lagoons technology doesn't add a constant flow of chemicals to the water. Instead, 400 sensors per acre continually monitor bacteria and algae levels. When those levels get too high, the system automatically injects the same chemicals used to treat drinking water, such as chlorine (to disinfect the water) and lime (to keep the pH level balanced). Because these chemicals are applied more efficiently, the amount that the pools need is 100 times less than what's used in an equivalent drinking water system. Ultrasonic pulses then cause algae to cluster up, making the filtration stage easier and more efficient.
