Opinions on CRKT folding knives?
« on: November 08, 2013, 08:13:44 PM »
I am eyeballing a CRKT folder, and I don't know much about them.  Does anyone have an opinion as to their quality?  Some Googling seems to show that they are good value for the money.

I've got a Crawford Kasper (?) that dad gave me years and years and years ago.

I'm super mean and abusive to knives. This sucker is still doing fine. It's got a good lock on the blade too.

I've had one for years as well. It is sturdy, sharp, and holds its edge very well.
Good knife for the price.

I've had the M6-12z for years and love it. Eventually the belt clip screws started to loosen. I would tighten them but then eventually lost one.  They sent me new ones no charge when I inquired as how to buy replacements.

Me, too. And I can't recommend it highly enough. Great blade.

The high end knife snobs look down on them as mass produced and a "commodity item", but I've never heard ill of them.

I got a CRKT Bandera off of Woot! a few years back, and I think it was the sharpest knife I'd ever had out of the box save for folding replaceable utility blade razor knives.
I promise not to duck.

I carry one of these on warmer days.  It's kinda fun sharpening, but otherwise is a fine little pocket knife.

Meh. Not much into them personally. Might be OK. Pay attention to the steel being used.

They were the most popular brand sold by our PX. They also broke a lot, although not as much as those damn Gerber multi-tools. I don't personally like or trust them, but in all fairness we beat the hell out of our knives and multis.

For non military field use (I.e EDC around town) they are a good value.

For hard use and/or lives depend on it working go up a level or two in quality. I carry CRKT around town and in garrison but have switched back to Benchmade or better for field and ship work.

I have the same one Gewehr98 posted.  I use it for a money clip.  Had it for many years.  The tanto blade is just about worthless though, except sticking something....chris3

I think they are probably a good value for what they are but I don't have a use for a knife in that market segment. Not cheap enough to be a throwaway and not good enough for me to want one as my EDC. If I outright couldn't afford a $100 knife I would probably still skip the CRKT and carry a $20 gerber (I had a pretty good one once) or a folding boxcutter. If you have a desire to collect a drawer full of mediocre Chinese knives the CRKT will fill your drawer, but I only need one knife. I've been carrying the same Spyderco Delica for almost 10 years now, and thats not exactly an expensive knife.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I have had a couple of them.  They were a good short-term value but were difficult to keep sharp.  Unless you need a beater knife, I think a Benchmade is a better long-term value.

I have both a KISS and PECK (medium sized and small sized of the "one-sided-sharpness" money-clip type, standard shape blade), which I like fairly well but actually don't carry all that much. They're more neat than anything else, I got both quite cheaply; my EDC is a Ken Onion Leek (stainless finish, plain wharncliffe blade), which I love. Accidentally lost one, bought a replacement, then found the older one. The KISS and PECK were (and are) both quite sharp; I've had occasion to sharpen the KISS, and once I got used to the "only sharpen the one side" bit, had no real issue with it. I like it, but wouldn't be crushed if I lost it.

Have several, in general ok and serviceable, need to carry mine more to deflect stuff like my Emerson or Crawford from box opening duty. Not great steel, easy to tune the edge up because they're soft.

I have a few, good knives for the money. They aren't up to Spyderco or Benchmade for quality and grade of steel, but they aren't up to Spyderco or Benchmade prices either.

Mine is OK, but not very rust resistant.  I use it to know when I need to clean & re-oil all my carry knives & tools, because it is the first to show a spot of rust on the blade.  Others being Victorinox, Beretta, and Leatherman.
