I'm a pretty big fan, but I posted over at Glock Talk some while back my displeasure over an early scene in "The Sontaran Stragegem:"

The Doctor is averse to being around the UNIT (UNified Intelligence Taskforce - formerly United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, until some killjoy at the UN said they couldn't use that name anymore  rolleyes ) Commander JUST because he carries a gun!  His "logic" being that the Commander carries a gun, and many of his enemies carry guns.

Had I been in the Commander's shoes, I would have immediately had the Doctor locked up.  "After all, we combat alien menaces.  And by your own logic you must be a menace because you are an alien!"  Show that uppity Timelord a thing or two...

Supposedly the next ep counterbalances that by showing the UNIT troops mopping the floor with the Sontarans.  The same Commander the Doctor dissed encounters the Sontaran general with his back to him.  He orders: "You will turn and face me, sir!!!" and gives the Sontaran a fighting chance as opposed to shooting him in the back - and the Commander wins the duel!

Ahh, but though I'm American, I have "ways" of getting to see the finale earlier...and the Doctor ends up getting completely and unequivocally OWNED on the issue:

Without saying too much - someone devastates the Doctor by pointing out that while he makes it a big deal over never CARRYING a weapon - he turns the people he meets INTO weapons that fight - and often DIE - for him!

  • In short, most intelligence is false.
Saw that episode.....had the same reaction....and giggled to myself that the alien force whose "ultimate weapon" brought UNIT to a standstill would have been completely wiped out by members of our National Muzzleloading Rifle Association, the Single-Action Shooting Society's Blackpowder division,  Civil War reenactors, and many who use muzzleloaders to hunt......  cheesy

Sontarans?  pffft!  Pushovers.  Any half-clad female savage with a knife can take THEM out.

I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

I must have missed that.  Are you saying they couldn't shoot?

That is one complaint I have about most TV shows.  The only people who are accurate beyond 3 yards are snipers.  Everyone else can't hit dirt except the hero or the bad guy who when killing the expendable red-shirts.

SPOILER ALERT........

The Sontarans used a device that "excited" copper alloys in the bullets and welded them to the chambers,  preventing UNIT from using their tacti-cool machine guns and autoloaders....... shocked

A quick trip to the British Arms Museum for a brace of Baker Rifles and cast-lead Minie-Balls would nullify that advantage quick.....that, or calling up Jed Clampett and the Redneck Special Forces.....  grin

The Doctor has always had an issue with personal weapons, yet he is also touted as a warrior. Over the years he has had surrogates doing his dirty work, from a hot Amazonian type to a robotic dog.

Since it has been on Sci Fi I've really enjoyed watching the series again. The show gets a pass from me on its occasional PC bullfeathers.

The episode that really had me rolling my eyes was when the Doctor was singing the praises of the welfare state  rolleyes

The Doctor has always had an issue with personal weapons,

I wouldn't say "always" - I just got a Sixth Doctor story, where he borrows an Uzi and opens up on the bad guy!  shocked  Of course, this was the Doctor that got the show cancelled for "excessive violence..."  rolleyes

Hm, I think I missed the welfare state bit in that story.

Oh yeah, one thing the Doctor did towards the end was VERY cool and bad-A.  Maybe even the Beeb understands that the claim "the bad guy will take your gun from you" IS true...IF you're not willing to use the gun!

Luke Rattigan pulls his gun on the Doctor, Donna, and Martha when they teleport into his school.  The Doctor does not miss a beat, but walks up to him, grabs the gun, and tosses it across the room!  grin

  • Who could it be?
    • @c0t0d0s2 / Twitter.
The Doctor is a strange type of "anti".  Definately not a pacifist.
He doesn't like guns, but he never has a problem with fighting.  I viewed him more like MacGyver, someone who just preferred to use other weapons other than firearms and firearm-like weapons. (lasers, whatever)

Those types of "antis" I have little problem with

If I remember that episode correctly (I saw it when it came out, I get them from a torrent after they come out in the UK) the Doctor's main problem was "shoot at anything you have a problem with" type behavior, not the gun itself, Which I can also appreciate.

Then again I might be remembering wrong, as I LOVE the Doctor Who series, even with a few of their PC faux pas.

google.com has a cute banner today honoring 50 years of The Doctor.  If you click on it, there's a pacman-like little game to play.

Wife keeps nagging me to subscribe to BBC America -- and I would, except the cable company only sells it bundled with a bunch of other crap, and the cable bill is too freakin' high already. (grumblegrumble)

We went to a friend's house that has it and watched "Day Of The Doctor".  It was kind of hard to follow, but maybe that's because there were kids and dogs running around making noise.  Also I've only seen one or two of the Matt Smith episodes.

I think we have seen it time and time again when folks are shooting ect against things clearly immune to it, so they keep on shooting instead of changing tactics.

You mean like this?

Highlight the line above.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Actually, for the thread it just started yesterday and has time travelled to today.

Too cool.  All the Doctors arrive together with their respective Tardis machines to save Gallifrey from the Daleks.

Then Doctor #4 (Tom Baker, whom I grew up watching) shows up as the curator.  Squee!

I was pretty late to the party, as I didn't start watching The Doctor until Christopher Eccelston inhabited the TARDIS. Might have to see if I can Netflix it from the start.
Personally, I do not understand how a bunch of people demanding a bigger govt can call themselves anarchist.

Quite a bit of it is on netflix though some of the early shows are kind of hard to take.
