Springfield XD-S Owners: Recall
« on: August 29, 2013, 05:47:16 PM »
Voluntary recall. Apparently some bad things can happen in rare circumstances.

http://www.springfieldrecall.com/

On their main page, a link directs you to that one, so it's legit.

Serial number range:

This Safety Recall applies only to:
Springfield 3.3 XD-Sâ„¢ 9mm pistols – serial numbers between XS900000 and XS938700
Springfield 3.3 XD-Sâ„¢ .45ACP pistols – serial numbers between XS500000 and XS686300.

This Safety Recall does not apply to any XD® or XD(M)® pistols.

Roll pin in the grip safety.  Hmm.  I wonder what's changed internally.

I just texted the link to Dad so he could call his friend with one.

Since we're likely to buy it off lou once he starts whining about "it kicks too much" and "it's too heavy" I'd rather have it get fixed first. =D

The XD-S, although similar in look, is a complete redesign from earlier models. That's why I was wary about carrying it right when it came out. The XD platform is proven to me, this is something new.

Yea I sympathize -- I sent mine in earlier today.
I already miss it. :'(
Oh well, better safe than sorry.
A lot of firearms have glitches in early models.  Atleast this way it'll get fixed.

Went through a similar thing with my Sig P-238 and the recoil spring.  Mine came with the early round spring and it got ..."scrunched."  The new flatmetal spring is still going strong.  Atleast I didn't have to send it in though.   ;/

D'oh! Mine's in the serial range. Guess I'll fall back to my XD-9 or the XD-45 in the meantime.

Got my shipping label via email already. Who's shipped a firearm via FedEx lately? I've done it before, but it's been 6 or 7 years. The way the rules read, it doesn't say anything about having to ship from a fedex hub (which I had to do last time).

That mean I could ship from a FedEx store? It does state you have to declare it's a firearm... not sure how I feel about that. I suppose they'd deny the insurance on it if it went missing and you hadn't declared it? I declared it last time, thankfully I had their own rules printed out to deal with the deer-in-headlights look I got from the clerk at the hub.

Have no idea. I think, unlike UPS, you can go to the store.

It cannot be shipped from a FedEx store, Kinko's, or a drop box.  It has to be taken to a manned FedEx shipping hub.  If you call FedEx customer service, they will tell you where the nearest facility is for you.

I know where mine is, just didn't want to have to go that far. . . Oh well, I can combine it with some other errands I can do in the same area.

Here's hoping the turn-around time on this isn't too awful.

Anyone that's sent theirs in get any info about it from Springfield? They said "Springfield will provide tracking numbers so you can monitor the receipt and return of your upgrades" on the recall site, but I haven't received anything since they received my XDS 1.5 weeks ago, just wondering if that's the same for others or if I need to be contacting them about it.

I haven't heard anything ... I wouldn't worry yet.  I heard on another site they received 7000 guns in one day  (!)  and another said that there will be a 30 day turn-around....and they won't start actually working on them until mid September (not THAT far off).
Start thinking end of the month... that's my idea as of now.

I received my XDs back on Wednesday of this week.

It was returned to me with an additional 7rd extended magazine, as a token apology for the recall event and the extended duration of the recall.

I immediately verified clear status and racked the slide and dryfired several times.  Trigger is considerably worse than it was before.  Not quite a DA revolver pull, but inching towards 7.5 or 8 pounds versus the ~6 pound pull it had before.  I'll be dryfiring the snot out of it over the next several months to break it in and see if it improves.

I took it out today while I was out on a dirtbike ride, and I pulled aside in a convenient desert corner to test it.  I ran about 25 rounds through it of 230gr LRN reloads.  No faults, from any of the magazines.

Accuracy was acceptable, even with the added trigger weight.  I didn't bring any targets with me, so I shot at stumps of creosote bushes and empty cartridge boxes at the ersatz shooting range I had chosen.  The pistol is much more accurate for me than my KelTec PF9, and far more comfortable to shoot.

Despite the degraded trigger, it's still my superior deep concealment pistol and trumps other choices consisting of a Smith 642, Ruger SP101, KelTec PF9 or FEG PA-63.  My XD9sc has a superior trigger, but that's a considerably larger pistol.

I got mine back in late October .... it wasn't my impression the trigger had changed very much but then OTOH I never actually had the opprtunity to put rounds through it before I sent it off.  Wasn't gonna try since I found out that it could go off upon loading!
So far though so good with the new improved gun.

Got mine week before Thanksgiving.  Shot good earlier this week.
