Video editing software
« on: January 25, 2015, 12:27:04 AM »
So, I have a GoPro (Hero 3+ Black).  I need to get some video editing software for post-processing the videos I get from it.  What does the hive mind recommend?

Kind hard to beat Adobe Premier if you want to spend a modest couple bucks.

Update to 8.1 and set for desktop mode. It'll be fine.

Eh, Windows 8/8.1 actually performs better than 7, it's just the Metro interface most people hate. Just throw Classic Shell on to get the start menu back, set it to boot to desktop instead of the metro start screen and it's just a better performing version of 7.

There's some other stuff I've run into, that mostly make it more difficult for me to actually fix things.

Back to the original question: How extensively do you intend to edit your videos, and how much do you want to spend? For the limited editing I've needed to do, Windows Movie Maker has been more than adequate. (I don't know if that's included in Win 8/8.1, but I think it can be downloaded for free.) And I'm sure there are freeware video editing packages that are better than Movie maker, but I haven't had a need to try them out.

Here ya go: http://installs.co/windows-movie-maker/?c=airinstaller&adgp=windowsmoviemaker&sq=windows%20movie%20maker%20download&kw=%22windows%20movie%20maker%20download%22&mt=e&ad=3

FREE!

The above apparently isn't a Microsoft product. The one below is -- and still free:

Movie maker is quite good for simple cut-n-paste inserts but you run up against its limitations pretty quickly.

Not sure how extensive I'll get with editing the videos.  I did download the GoPro software, but probably won't have time to play with it for a few days.

So, I'm trying to get the videos of Thing 2's basketball games edited so I can upload them to YouTube.  As they came from the camera YouTube says they'll take 2-3 days per 8-9 minute video to upload.  So obviously I need to change something.  When I try to edit them in the GoPro software I'm only getting like 30sec-2min out of the 8-9 minutes per video in the output.  How do I get the entire video to come out from that software?  The clips at least are small enough (in terms of MB/min) to be worth trying to upload, if I could just get the full length.

How big are the files and what does your internet upload speed test to?

Also check the resolution settings. No reason to have 1080p quality for YousLess Tube. Set your resolution to 720i if you can.

Still learning everything, obviously, but at 8-9 minutes the raw videos are 2GB, roughly.  Cutting that down was a big part of why I wanted the video editing software.

Great googly moogly... no wonder your estimated load time is high!

What file format are you saving in? Switch to mp4 if it's not already the default.

Then the next switch is to save a seperate file that's been downconverted to 720i. That should reduce the file size by over half. Also, use speedtest.net and check your upload speed.
