Are there any real good android GPS programs for driving?
« on: February 09, 2014, 02:19:26 PM »
Just traded my iPhone for a Samsung. I used Motion X GPS. I couldn't have been happier- start it up, it finds you, type in an address, and it would take you from driveway to driveway, with voice guidance. It also prompted about upcoming lane changes and turns, long in advance, which was very helpful to me in California. Is there anything similar for droid?

My phone has a pre-loaded app, called Maps. I type in the desired address, and once it finds the destination, there is a little blue car down in the lower right corner. I click on that, and it gives me a choice of car, walking, bus, etc. I click on the route, down at the bottom (it says 22 minutes, or whatever), and then press the Start button.

Mine also has a Verizon app called VZ navigator, which I think does the same thing.

I can't tell you if either of those are similar to what you're looking for. I tend to use just the visual part of the map itself, so I don't usually ask the phone to give me the directions.

Osmand seems to have a lot of trouble with house numbers, but if you can handle directions to the nearest cross street, it's really good. and designed for offline use, so it doesn't choke if you lose signal for a while.  Waze needs a lot of work still, and is online-only, so if you lose signal or their routing server goes down, you can end up losing your routing at a critical time.

VZ Navigator is pretty close, but there is a monthly fee. Motion x Has an annual fee, but it's about the same as two months of vz.
I really need voice, I can't multi task, especially if I need to use my reading glasses. I can either read or drive, not both.

Galaxy SIII.  I use Maps, too.  Seems to work pretty well, although it's not a true "talk you to your destination" destination go-getter-er.

Maps = Google Maps. Another free option is Waze, which uses crowd-sourced traffic data to provide free traffic alerts. Although, it was recently bought by Google and its biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to Google's own so any data collected is now fed directly into the beast. I mainly use Waze for the traffic alerts on my commute, and Google already knows where I live and where I work, so I'm unconcerned with the data collecting.

I use Google maps navigation mode as well. I've not seen anything that's better enough to be worth switching.

I've not had it steer me wrong yet, and the only times I know better ways, I already know the area, making Maps redundant in the first place.
I promise not to duck.

Don't follow your GPS directions out in the boonies.  It will lead you off a cliff.   =(

I didn't know it had a spoken directions function. Guess I'm the one who's missing something.

Or into low train bridges. Google "Onondaga Lake Parkway"

There are about 100 signs, flashing lights, the entire main beam is painted blaze orange. There's even a laser that tall vehicles will trip that sets off more lights and flashy thingies. Once a year somebody drives a semi or other large truck into it anyway. A couple years ago it was a double-decker tour bus and 4 people died.

Drive stated that they were following the GPS.

I'm new to it but, my buddy uses Waze exclusively and from what I've seen it works great! You can alert other users to cops and oter traffic hazards in realtime.. Gives turn by turn directions and is pretty darned accurate (from what I saw, I'm still new to it).

You can alert other users to cops...

Don't try that in Ellisville.  =)

Another recommendation for WAZE.  With the user interfaces you can also get routing around red light cameras and adding streets that were built since the last time the maps were updated.  I really like the real-time traffic speeds - helps to decide if & where to jump off the major artery.

Waze is great and I use it a lot. Only complaint is it sometimes gets a little overly technical in what it believes to be the shortest/quickest route.

Wait until you get a few dozen of the right-turn-u-turn-right-turn messes where it thinks a light is too long.  If the u turn is off screen, you don't know until you're halfway through the process.
