VoIP Service Recommendations?
« on: February 07, 2014, 01:55:41 PM »
I have a cable/internet/phone bundle with TWC, and I need to economize. I've decided to ditch cable. Only option to switch at my location is AT&T, and pricing is comparable. I use NetFlix streaming and just got a Roku, so the only real sacrifice will be instant gratification for Justified/Walking Dead/SoA/etc.

In addition to internet access, I want to keep a "land line" phone, because a) I spend hours per week talking long-distance, and doing that on my cell phone (Verizon HTC Droid 2) is impractical due to poor signal and comfort, and b) I have bills and services tied to the home phone number I don't want to shift to the cell. I've also become a bit of a Luddite recently, not keeping up with tech advances.

So, thoughts on VoIP service providers or other options for my situation?

TIA,

We've been very happy with Ooma. The VOIP modem is a bit spendy (~$100), but after that you only pay taxes/goobermint fees every month, which comes to $3.74/month for us. Includes unlimited nationwide calling, and voicemail. The fancier features require more/month but we don't care enough about them to shell out any more.

I've heard good things about ooma, and we would have gotten one except that they can't transfer our phone #yet. (hopefully soon!)

If they can transfer your number, they do charge for it ($40, or buy a year of their premium service). We didn't care enough to pay the extra when we switched, as not enough people knew the number for it to be a hassle.

When I was an IT consultant, but working at home, it was important for me to have a "phone" at home but given that all of my clients were distant a traditional line would have been really costly.

Vonage was my first go-to.  It worked, and it was simple, but I had horrible quality problems with it.  The slightest uptick of traffic on my LAN would turn the conversation into  R2D2 squeaks and pops.  I tried fixing it with QoS rules but never did find a solution.

Skype worked much better.  Granted, I only used it from a PC, but they do have WiFi handset models that work with their service.  And the service is basically free unless you want a dedicated number for people to call you.  I think it was was something stupid low like $12/year for that.  Don't quote me, but it was cheaper than Vonage and I felt it worked better.

It's all gonna be VoIP in 6 years anyway.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Been using Vonage since 2002.

No problems at all, but they will not offer call blocking.

That's a pain, especially coming election time, etc.
