The anti-Google Glass
« on: February 19, 2014, 08:35:39 AM »
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-57619039-71/icis-its-like-google-glass-but-classy/

Drudge and this CNET article seem to be mostly focused on aesthetic value, but I found this perspective much more interesting:

Quote
There is no light that comes on with these when you are being filmed. We felt that a light would be overkill and that people would think that they would be getting scanned. Additionally, if I were in a crowded bar or walking down the street I wouldn't know how many cell phone cameras and police cameras were looking at me anyway. I like to look at the upsides of having a camera like this on board. Think of how many people who were wrongly convicted of crimes would not be in jail right now or how much more abuse of police power would be exposed.

We are seeing defensive use of tech, becoming more mainstreamed in its marketing.

The number of activists that carry an audio or even video recording device routinely is staggering.  Something like this will be devoured by them with considerable enthusiasm.

Yeah, I have Gmail, and they have now started inserting ads into my inbox, with no "Mark as spam" option.

Agreed... this isn't Google Glass though.  It's a competing startup.

I'm not going to be buying a personal HUD like this or Glass.  I'm just pointing out a distinct difference between this one and Glass.

Google is a known quantity when it comes to government/NSA "integration."  A known bad quantity.  Glass LOOKS like a little computer.  It has a light indicating that it is recording.  It sticks out.

This product is more subtle, lacks an indicator light, and the manufacturer has made a clear statement that they appreciate the privacy concerns of their particular customer (the person behind the glasses).  They obviously don't care about the privacy of people seen through the lenses of their product, but they also appear to realize that police act differently around Glass users versus the rest of the public and want to capitalize on a key difference between their product and Glass.

Meh.  My dashcam's record light is disabled, in part because if people can't see when it's not recording, they're more apt to behave, assuming that it is.  I don't drive it into bathrooms or people's homes.  Privacy in public is more silly crap made up by the people who made up their "right" to not have anything that offends them happen in a public place.

I'm at the point where I'm getting wishy washy on whether it would be better to carry a recording device in public to protect me from abuse by the state, or whether it would be better to wear anti-technology devices that block all forms of electronic scanning of my person and belongings.

With cell phones cameras everywhere, you pretty much already have the chance of being recorded in public.  The glasses just make it easier.

Personally, I doubt that more police brutality would be seen.  I think it just as likely more false accusations would be rooted out.  It is hard to say as most videos you see now accusing cops of brutality are based on edited footage.  Then there are stories like the 4 cops in Houston who were accused to beating a teenager who took them on a foot chase for a ways before they caught him.  The video was far from conclusive, at least the parts I saw.  Didn't stop the usual suspects from making a big fuss about it.

I am definitely in favor of cops wearing continuous audio/video recording devices while on duty.  I think it would be a tool on their side most of the time.

I know of bicyclists and motorcyclists who are running a GoPro on all their rides for evidence, should they be run over or harassed.

There's a mount on top of my helmet for just that.

Boss gave me the go ahead to order a GoPro Hero 3 Silver to do some time lapse videos of our install crews.  I'll have to try it out side by side with my original HD Hero.  Low light performance is one of my main factors, since most of my riding is late evening or full dark.

Too bad 360* camera systems are not readily available at a good cost. Dash cam only helps so much if you're rear ended.

I think a version of the torque app that could integrate video would be good. Use cars systems to record every sensor on car.it has gps turns out a report shows speed trip route and stops duration of stops. Shows how much throttle is being used acceleration and deceleration as well as speed etc

Forwards and rear facing cameras, GPS and speed sensors, collision inertia sensors, interior audio.
