Is College for Everyone?
« on: March 16, 2014, 12:19:07 PM »
I couldn't find the last topic on this subject using the "lazy search" (is it obvious on the first page?) function, so new topic on an interesting article on the subject. A few things in here on college in the late 19th - early 20th centuries that I didn't know about.

Can this article be trusted for accurate stats? It claims that only 17 large schools have self supporting sports programs. Haven't we been assured right here at APS that these athletic programs are a financial net gain for colleges?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

My bet is it would depend on how you determine "financial net gain."

The strongest supporters of colleges (by that I mean $$$) tend to be those with ties to their athletic programs.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought
