Looks like the NRA is taking a position on the Texas Open Carry stuff currently going on:
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2014/06/02/nra-splits-with-open-carry-texas-amid-chipotle-beef/I'm slightly conflicted on it. On the one hand, I hate to see the NRA making the concession. On the other hand, not from the 2nd Amendment, but from the "how to behave in society" side, I can't help but agree with the NRA. I only have the information I've seen from Youtube videos (most of them recorded by TOC themselves), in which I'm simply not impressed with the individuals representing the organization.
Frankly, right or wrong, appearance is 50% of your argument when making a point -- whether in a work meeting, public meeting, or simply out in public. When I see the videos of these guys wearing T-shirts with the sleeves ripped off, like I did as a kid in the 70's, embracing urban gutter speech instead of proper English, and basically making spectacles of themselves instead of quietly going about their business without standing out (which I think is supposed to be the whole eventual conclusion to their demonstrations - gun owners blending in unnoticed), I simply cringe.
Maybe if they stopped by a Mens Wearhouse on the way to their protest and picked up some Khakis and a polo shirt and spoke English, they might get better results. I dress sloppy and cuss sometimes on the weekends, but throughout my career, when I wanted to make an impression in a meeting or wherever, I showed up in proper business attire and spoke like I at least made it out of High School.
I do understand that possibly none of this would be going on if Texas law allowed the OC of handguns, as I think in a good portion of TX, that would already go mostly unnoticed.
