I just want to sell some stuff online?
« on: June 16, 2014, 02:44:33 PM »
I was looking at insurance for my stuff and was reading the exclusions.
I wonder how many derelict mines or torpedoes the Post Office runs into on a yearly basis? ???

7.War Exclusion / Atomic and Nuclear Exclusion: In no case shall this insurance cover loss damage or expense caused by (i)War, civil war, revolution, rebellion, insurrection, or civil strife arising therefrom, or any hostile act by or against a belligerent power. (ii) Capture, seizure, arrest, restraint or detainment (piracy excepted), and the consequences thereof or any attempt thereat. (iii) Derelict mines, torpedoes, bombs, or other derelict weapons of war. In no case shall this insurance cover loss damage or expense arising from the use of any weapon of war employing atomic or nuclear fission and/or fusion or other like reaction or radioactive force or matter.

The other nine clauses have fairly reasonable wording.Though there is an extended radioactive contamination exclusion clause.Don't know if I'd be around to file a claim with that one.

So your friendly neighborhood postman drives his Jeep over a UXO Mk 82 and gets blown to bits, and they won't cover you? Now that's some serious BS right there.

Did the Post Office ever experience any losses of domestic mail to German subs during WWII?

I always thought that insurance was protection from loss by accident, not by acts of God or misadventure (the latter being where most of the exclusions fit in).

It is comforting, though, to know that should pirates carry off my goods as ill-gotten booty the USPS will cover my loss.  (I know the postal inspectors just put in purchase orders for scads and scads of ammo.  Have they gotten their Army-surplus MWAPS yet?  What about boats the Navy no longer wants to chip the rust & flaking paint from?)

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.
