In praise of the Presto microwave popcorn popper
« on: June 23, 2014, 07:45:26 PM »
http://www.amazon.com/Presto-04830-PowerPop-Microwave-Multi-Popper/dp/B00005IBXK

I bought this at a whim the other day, because I wanted to experiment with popcorn as a low-calorie snack.

I have discovered that using 1/3 cup of Orville's popcorn, no oil and 3:30 minutes in the microwave makes about 12 cups of light and fluffy popcorn.  I dump it into a bowl, give it a few sprays of olive oil and some cheese popcorn seasoning, and is just delicious. Almost all of the kernels pop, and by not using oil, I am able to use the microwave paper concentrators for about 10 batches before they are too singed to use again.

I would highly recommend this product if you want to make quick and easy low-calorie popcorn.

Pretty neat.

Here is my no-oil microwave popcorn popper:

1/3 cup, 3 minutes.  A few sprays of generic buttery spry and salt.

I will try the olive oil and cheese seasoning.

I am using these, which I can find at my local Wal-Mart for $ 1.95 per shaker.

Hard core.  I like to include some popcorn, but my hat's off to you.

So is there a better popcorn than the Orville Redenbacher Original popcorn kernels that I buy at Safeway?

I like the stuff that comes out of Iowa, like Jollytime and Snappy popcorn, but I'm a bit biased.

When my parents bought their first Amana Radarange, it came with a popcorn popper similiar to the OP's.

I think it was about six before we used the microwave for anything but popcorn.

P.S. Always make sure the lid is secured.    =D [popcorn] [popcorn]

Many years ago my Mother bought me a popcorn popper bowl for my microwave. It was that heavy beige plastic that was all the rage for microwave stuff back then. It has something in the plastic at the bottom of the bowl that concentrates the microwave energy. More than once I've reached into the bowl and singed the tips of my fingers. It does a decent job of popping, it's dishwasher safe, and it makes a decent serving bowl.

I like my popcorn buttered, normally with salt but also occasionally with some fresh ground pepper.

I also occasionally put powdered chicken or beef stock on it, which gives it an interesting flavor.

Hum... Going to have to get some of that Kernel Seasonings. Nacho cheese sounds really good.

I despise all things microwave-ours is 18 years old and almost never used. (I think my wife uses it to make the hummingbird nectar.)
I pop Amish popcorn (forget the name) in a big stove top pan with the whirly crank thingy in the lid and I add real butter and sea salt in the last few cranks.

But what about all that micro-newcular-ion-reversing-radiation-wave stuff? =D

I heat up broth and/or bacon grease for the dog in the winter, my wife makes hummingbird nectar in the summer, and other than that it probably doesn't get used 2x per month. We use it like a breadbox for crackers and bread.
and microwave popcorn just ain't right...
