Fistful develops superpowers and lays waste to the village
« on: July 25, 2014, 10:47:18 AM »
http://online.wsj.com/articles/radioactive-waste-in-st-louis-at-risk-from-smoldering-trash-1406219385?cb=logged0.45125289033258875

Behind a paywall, but the article describes how a subsurface garbage fire at the West Lake landfill is moving towards a section of buried radioactive waste.  After the radiation is released in St. Louis, we will all soon wish that we had been nicer to Fistful.

Our radiation regs are so strict and overly-cautious, I'm willing to bet that in comparison to the majority of that waste, living in Denver, taking more than 4 high altitude cross-country airline flights, having granite countertops, or some vintage Fiestaware is more exposure.
I promise not to duck.

So is the radioactive waste buried in with the garbage?  I highly doubt that.

Here's a freebie link to the subject:

http://www.kmov.com/news/mobile/Koster-says-Bridgeton-landfill-owners-are-withholding-information-on-underground-fires-239696701.html

I would not be surprised if there was some overlap  between the active dump site and the household dump site, given the withholding of information and the money involved.

The Boulder CO rifle club is situated on what used to be a city dump.  Before it became formalized (ca. 1966) there was an underground fire going on at all times, and you could see smoke rising from cracks in the ground.

I don't know if it ever went out.

There was a place near Marshall CO (yes, that's the correct spelling) where smoke constantly rose from the ground.  But that was from an underground abandoned coal mine fire.  I used to prowl around there and do some shooting, but it was unfenced, unposted, and very thinly populated at the time... like one per square mile... the "one" being me. :D

So, trivia, but indeed underground fires do occur and are hard to extinguish.

ETA: Found some links to the coal seam fire, FYI:

Colorado in general.  They're more common than I thought:

Going to former war zones and speeding up the removal of land mines and un-exploded bombs?Kinda like Princess Diana with a slight southern drawl? For the good of all mankind?

Or just looking at girls, like the TSA?

Oh, I meant that I'd help them locate the underground hazards, of course.

Fistful: "I AM SCRAP IRON MAN!!!"

I was thinking more along the lines of "The Toxic Avenger".
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

So is the radioactive waste buried in with the garbage?  I highly doubt that.

Could have some old medical or industrial type waste from before 1972. Landfill could also be a superfund site also that hasn't been cleaned up or deemed stable for a later clean up date.
